For me, what's unethical about Google's behavior is that they have mislead people about what they do with it. They've used dark patterns in their UI to keep people from opting out. And they've turned over data to police

This outstanding film documents nearly every aspect of life in and around Chernobyl both before, during, and after the disaster. It contains many facts and viewpoints I had never seen elsewhere, both negative and positive. The story of the

Tritium isn't really a "separate chemical" but rather an isotope of hydrogen. Since water molecules are made of hydrogen and oxygen bound together, there is no simple way to remove the radioactive hydrogen by itself. The curr

When fuzzy logic rice cookers were new and exotic in the US, you had to go to Chinatown to get one (20+ years ago) and they were $300! If these catch on, the price will come way down.

It's trying to show evidence that some (many?) people can be triggered by certain words like Arab/ic. The Lamaître example is much harder. You'd have to be a physics gearhead to know that one. (He was mentioned in a book I ju

This has been going on forever. I think it explains why a Jeff Koonz just sold for ~$91M. It's not that the sculpture is worth that much, per se, it's more of a store of value. Famous artist Gerhard Richter said that modern art pr

I think "Dyno mode" refers to a dynamometer, a stable platform used to test a running vehicle. Still, people are finding new vulnerabilities every day in these "computers in wheels."

The specific radioactive pollutant I'm speaking of is tritium which has been found in discharge water from 45 of 65 tested US nuclear sites.[0] Tritum's half-life is more than 12 years, not a few minutes. [ibid] Several studies

Sorry if the brevity of the post lead to any ambiguities. I was up against HN's character limit. Exposure to radiation does, indeed make other materials radioactive. This is something the Navy learned during early atomic experiments li

Love the revelation that swimming down to touch the spent fuel rods would be fatal. Pro-nuclear folks don't like facts like that because they want to pretend that either there is no waste, the waste won't hurt you, or we've s

The "safe nuclear" future is always right around the corner, yet it never arrives. There are no commercial molten salt plants and all proposed and under construction plants around the world are "old nuclear" PWRs or BW

I would hope no one would try to swim in one, but if you empty the pools where the vast majority of America's nuclear waste is stored, most people would say the resulting cavity strongly resembles a swimming pool.

Vast swaths of North America have been under water or covered in ice sheets at various points in the Earth's history, including the time when humans lived. I think it's fair to say that we are not well adapted to live under water

No. Chemicals operate at the level of atoms and molecules. Nuclear radiation operates at the subatomic level and moves through matter into other matter. You can hold a rock made of heavy metal in your hand which would kill you if ingested
