The whole industry is dying, all over the world, and must now reply on PR puff pieces such as this one that continue to haul out the "climate will kill us!" bogeyman. Perhaps nuclear advocates haven't considered that, given e

The waste problem has in no way been solved. Reprocessing is, itself, horribly polluting and its waste byproducts are more dangerous than the original spent fuel rods. I'll also add here that Fukushima is still pouring radiation int

When states impose their will on the people, public sentiment doesn't matter. The idea that a former Soviet state would submit nuclear power to a democratic vote is simply farcical.

How is nuclear getting safer when nearly all plants are at or past their design lifetimes? Seems to me like that would mean it's getting unsafer.

Chemicals can be filtered out of water. Radiation cannot.

Banning fossil fuels would also set society back 100 years. They're literally the basis of all of modern life. I don't think you'll get many takers for that argument.

The problem is scale. Today's nuclear plants are just big scaled-up versions of the Navy's original small reactors for ships. Unfortunately, scaling the power output also scales the risks and consequences of an accident.

I know of no technology that would allow a plant operator to simply walk away. Even spent fuel rods have to be cooled for years in a swimming pool (with constantly added fresh water) or they too will heat and catch fire. Care to explain you

The author is right. While rebulding Notre Dame might be difficult and expensive, changing it would be catastrophic.

How convenient that the author neglects to mention that facial recognition systems have also been shown to be biased against people of color. Kudos to SF. More surveillance doesn't mean less crime; it means less freedom.

These stories are so misleading. Up only means something in relation to when you bought. Everyone bought at different prices and some people are very "up" while others are decidedly down.

The why is obvious if you watch the movie. Since childhood, Holmes was motivated to get rich and she's an entirely amoral person.

No, the disaster was caused by people who had ample evidence of tsunami activity in the area and didn't design the plant to cover that eventuality. Turkey Point near Miami is prone to hurricanes and has several of the same design probl

Great comments in this thread. Let's also not forget Fukushima is still pouring radiation into the ocean, and that the melted core is unreachable for cleanup.

Adam Frank's About Time is an excellent and non-technical intro to the subject which weaves together the cultural and economic changes in history which led us to the current standard model of physics. Suffice it to say that, if we li

I'm no astrophysicist, though Frank is. The two concepts I'm referring to as being "discarded" were Newton's idea that motion (ie: time and space) exist in a fixed frame of reference. I think it's fair to say E

I thought it was strange that none of the press on this story had anything to say about what the text means. If you've "decoded" something, shouldn't you be able to provide an English transcript? Why bury the lede?
