That’s not the core of the argument. You know that. I’m putting things into perspective for people who are terrified that the last drops of their potable water and going to be used to generate a meme video.

Is that all you have? Calling people sociopaths? No, I feel a great deal of empathy for and solidarity with my neighbors. Enough that I’ll argue for acting in our self-interest even if it’s unpopular. And what do you do when your neighbors

2008 is apples vs oranges. The proposed data center site is across the street from the dump, just south of the airport. It’s zoned for heavy industrial use. Literally anything that they could build there other than a data center would have

It’s reaching the point of absurdity in my area. People are bringing “All data centers are flammable” signs to city meetings. A plot of land that’s already zoned for the heaviest of industrial activities, is across the street from a dump, 3

Yeah, and we’re starting to inoculate people against that kind of rhetoric. It’s a process.

I’m glad this is finally becoming the cause célèbre du jour. This feels like THE FIGHT or at least one of the TOP 3 THE FIGHTS and it hasn’t had even a fraction of the public’s attention until now.

You still study the humanities. I majored in software engineering, minored in business. I still took a full year of philosophy classes. Literature too. Four years is a long time, you’re not just focused on business and engineering every wak

Start thinking about α-gal syndrome, even if you're in The North. I just pulled an adult Lone Star tick off my back last night. I had no idea that they had made it to Northern Illinois. Now I get to spend the summer waiting to see if a

I've never really liked Taylor Lorenz's writing, but after following her work in 2025/2026, I have to admit that she is our girl on this one.

This is the eternal conversation around auth. “The thing you do doesn’t work for the thing I do.” OK. Use something else.

Security doesn't start or end with JWTs. A user wants to access a read-only resource with an invalid JWT? Envoy bounces it without passing the request through to the backend. Valid JWT? Let the request through without having to look up

I think you're underestimating your own creativity. My argument is that you can put most good developers into game development and with a little time and experience those devs will find that the work isn't much harder than any oth

Deliberately misunderstanding my point while making my point! Yes! Games are complex! An empty site with modern infrastructure is just as complex as an empty multiplayer video game, exactly, we agree! However, NGINX+a file isn't going

I'm at a loss when it comes to this comment section. I'm not sure why most people here seem to think that web development is just querying a database and presenting the results. I'm often doing math when working with ranking

Is it harder because you’re less experienced with games. Your big tech job really requires no creativity? Modern sites are extremely complex. BASH, Docker, Kubernetes, Python, Varnish, NGINX, Postgres, Cassandra, Elastic, Redis, Celery, CSS

Games have engines that provide so much. Unreal, Gadot, Unity. Have you tried doing modern frontend work? Creativity is required. I played with Claude recently. It wasn’t able to refactor a CSS one liner into simple sass mixin.

All development requires creativity. Different types of creativity for different types of problems. Creativity isn’t narrowly defined to exclude everything but art, game mechanisms, and narrative. You think the creation of GMail didn’t take

> engineering in video gaming is generally more complex than the engineering I've done working in big tech. I always roll my eyes when I hear this from game developers. And my eyes hurt from rolling I've heard it so many times.

Another response that (deliberately?) misses the point. I’m going to stop responding after this one. Again, deliberate exaggeration. When I say “rotting in front of YouTube” the key to understand my point is the word “rotting”, not “YouTube
