SSNs are not even supposed to be used as identifiers in the first place -- that it is being used as the key identifier to determine your creditworthiness is already mind-boggling.

I used to do that until I discovered the Compact theme (which is now installed by default, previously only available on the developer edition without installing an add-on).

I've known banks that don't let you change the PIN on their cards - for "security" reasons. And banks with 5-digit maximum password lengths - "oh, it's strong enough, you need to use a token to get money out an

there's a way to be an ethical investor - pick a 401(k) fund that invests in ethical businesses (according to whatever ethical standard you hold). This might not be an option for everyone, of course.

If WF were to fail under Amazon's tutelage, maybe we shouldn't be looking at nationwide competitors but at local stores for replacement? Here in the Bay Area I'm really happy with Draeger's. Haven't really been back

I've worked in several open plan companies, and what I find to be a key differentiator is that the companies that make it work: a) institute a reasonable minimum amount of space per person b) have enough quiet areas for people who find

The definition of "border" is surprisingly vast too -- if you're within 100 miles of any "external boundary". Two thirds (!) of Americans live within this "border" area. https://www.aclu.org

I'm also on the 6P; holding off on the Pixel until the next-gen replacement is available (hopefully at saner price levels). I have some battery issues (running battery-guzzling games would often cause the phone to shut down at ~ 40% ba

yeah, that's why in a previous job I try to stick to OpenJDK even though IntelliJ would warn that it might not be fully compatible. At least it's built and packaged by the distro so it does not leave a mess on the filesystem.

We do that at work. Things get complicated with the latest-generation MBP of course - now we have the old MagSafe charger, ThinkPad chargers, USB C chargers, as well as HDMI, DP, and USB-C Thunderbolt video connectors.

A bit of vendor lock-in as well at times (pragmatic reason for using Chrome and ideological reason to stay away from it). YouTube TV, for instance, currently only works on Chrome -- not on Safari and Firefox.

That, indeed. If you want something lighter-weight than Unity or Gnome but based on the Gnome stack, running Budgie on top of your existing distro is a nice alternative. One of these days I'm going to get it packaged in Fedora too...
