One big one is that you can check out a working copy of a particular sub-path in the repository. This means you don't need the whole repo (or the repo's entire history) locally, which is necessary in workflows where build products and othe

I think that the idea is that if you declare the taxable value, then later try to sue someone for a much higher value, then you've now committed fraud against the IRS. Of course, the easy work around to this is the claim that it's value inc

I wrote my senators and congressman in NM a while back about this. I fly for work, but my family hasn't flown anywhere (and most likely won't) since the groping and naked cameras started. Instead we drive, which is quite a bit more dangerou

It turns out that if you ban a certain set of users they will react strongly, often causing many more problems. At Chesspark I was just amazed at the lengths people would go to to get revenge for some perceived wrong when they got reprimand

Yes. Google did the original work for Jingle, but passed it to the XSF for standardization. That work has been done for some time and implementations have been appearing in various places. Even so, I suspect it will be a long time before Sk

The EDoc improvements are a long time coming, and the halfword emulator may drastically reduce the amount of memory needed for some people. Erlang improves at quite a rapid pace for a mature language.

There is no real documentation yet, which is unfortunate. "rebar -c" is pretty helpful for what commands it has, and most of the layout conventions are not rebar's, but OTP's (those are documented here: http://www.erlang.org/doc/design_pri

For Erlang specifically, you should probably use rebar ( http://github.com/basho/rebar ). It is pretty much the best thing ever. A common pattern lately is to use rebar with a very minimal makefile that just makes things like "make" and "ma

You have big friends with the Xiph codecs. Almost all the big game publishers ship Speex, Vorbis, FLAC, and Theora. Epic, EA, Microsoft, etc. The adoption in that market is ridiculously high. That's a lot of cash on the table for patent tro

I'm not going to defend Winer's point of view, but I also prefer XML for some tasks. Namespaces make XML extensible in a way that JSON is not. In XML, I can add an attribute or a child node anywhere without affecting anything else. There is

People have indeed put many things (some strange) into the Ogg format. I was once contracted to build MIDI + Vorbis support and I added a mapping for MIDI in Ogg fairly easily. Granted, I was heavily involved with Xiph, but I am not Monty.

The goal of the Xiph.org Foundation was never make Vorbis or Theora take over the world. The goal was to provide royalty-free multimedia codecs. If VP8 is open sourced and they make the required patent grants, the world gets a royalty-free

It's fairly common. After all, you can also think about it as you pay for how many users will be using it. Google has a lot more users than Collecta.
