Because for venture-backed companies, becoming wildly profitable is only one of several possible exits. Acquisition, IPO, and bankruptcy are the most common other exits.

Having recently used an N900, I had to laugh at this comment. The screen was awful. The fact that it isn't capacitive makes it feel like sad, old technology. Maemo is nice, and the built in XMPP support was quite good. The screen's resoluti

You'd be surprised what you'd get just by asking politely. Find people you think can help you and that would be good teachers and just ask.

Self-driving cars don't have to be safe in an absolute sense, just safer than human drivers. I think in some ways that is not a very high bar.

Mozilla has not poured any money into Theora that I know of. The primary developers are all working on it in their spare time or as part of their jobs with other companies. For example, Monty is employed at RedHat. The fact that Theora is c

A second point I forgot to mention is that I do not know of Adobe suing anyone over standard PDF/PostScript features, but there is a long history of Thompson and all the other audio/video patent holders being very litigious and threatening.

RedHat did this, and I was very happy about it at the time, being involved with the Xiph.org projects. The users hated it, but I don't see how to educate users about this any other way.

How are these comprable? Adobe has a patent agreement that says it won't sue you if you are implementing PDF or PostScript. Sure, it's maybe not absolute freedom, but it is markedly better than the situation with any of the encumbered audio

I've heard of it, but have no direct experience. Everyone I've met who has direct experience just shudders whenever it is mentioned. My understanding is that it is extremely complex and difficult to implement.

Even with a binary format, you'd be sending data out of band in XMPP. XMPP is designed for interchanging _small_ bits of data. Large data blocks destroy latency, so they are usually sent out of band. Plenty of large data blocks occur withou

We don't go that far, but we did choose the data center that had the faster machines. It had upgraded hardware that the others didn't. It won't be the fastest forever, but you can certainly shop around internally to find faster machines.

Maybe. I know when we migrated Chesspark from native machines to EC2, the postgresql database performance was at least an order of magnitude worse, and we spent two weeks doing caching and index hunting that we never had to worry about bef

An old English teacher of mine tried to convince us that you couldn't be bored if you didn't know the word "bored". You certainly can. There are no words for the feelings many people have. We have a whole system of literature for this, whi

Power users can still use power tools; not all such tools are taken down by craigslist, and even if they were, there is still a gap between tool creation and takedown big enough for exploitation. I have loved and used craigslist for years,
