What’s a workaday hacker and what’s UB?

Yes, it seems like we need some kind of crypto police to enforce that people actually do what they say they will do on the blockchain.

I don’t know anything about blockchain, but setting up beforehand some kind of auto trigger to buy daisies with the funds would seem to solve that problem. Whether the work actually happens after that point, yes I agree, I don’t see a way f

I was a UTCS PhD student back in 2013-2016. I was looking forward to taking a graduate class taught by Dr. Cook on programming languages, but the timing didn’t line up. I always considered that to be a bit of a shame, as I knew he was going

I like hearing dreams because it tells me something about the other person’s psyche, which is interesting.

Last time I was coding, I used vim+tmux. I found terminal emulation in emacs slow and buggy. I do always have a spacemacs window open, but I only use it for magit.

I agree with this. I’ve often contemplated that given that the part of me that has a poor work ethic and refuses to get help has generally won out, I would easily be on the streets if I was born into a family of low socioeconomic status, ra

I am thankful for the recent Ask HN thread where the guy mentioned he feels dumb and lazy. I found it very relatable and it caused good introspection on my part as well.

As of yesterday, they were only at $5M. To see it jump to $25M today is staggering, and insanely impressive, from a fundraising perspective.

Love PE. Back in undergrad, we kept a leaderboard amongst each other to see who could solve the most problems. I had just learned python and thought I was cool. Good times.

This article was really relatable. Not that I’m an entrepreneur, but thinking that I’m unique in the problems I face. Actually, I still do think that. For my entire software dev career, I’ve mostly felt unmotivated, disconnected, slacking o

It’s a belief. That everyone else is smarter than you. Opposite of dunning-kruger, where you think you’re smarter than everyone else.

Anything, in excess. But, it seems that winning in life is figuring out how to get healthy addictions (to work, exercising, good diet, helping other people).

Yes, I can relate. I realize now that fun conversation is highly illogical, emotion based. I view my desire for control and logic actually gets in the way of emotions, which makes conversations less enjoyable.

I think the big 5 personality traits are a good lens to view your question. Of the big 5 personality traits, neuroticism and conscientiousness seem the most relevant here, to manifest these behaviors. I think being high in neuroticism and l

I guess I’m missing the part which indicates this is obviously a scam. I don’t know why people are attending this conference, but could anyone actually be getting value out of it? If so, then it just depends whether you find this conference

An issue with just focusing on problems is that sometimes it’s not clear what the problem is. Say you create a fun little app that a hundred people download, that you just had a good time making. What problem did it solve for them? Boredom?
