Would recommend ‘A Tour of C++’, also by Stroustrup. It is quite short, largely updated for C++20, and a reasonably speedy intro for people who know other languages.

Maybe an alternate distribution would be some number n such that there is one paper cited at least n times, at least two papers cited n/2 times, at least 3 cited n/3, up to n=10 or so. Allows for a bit of a tail and still easy to

The long tail of artists that makes the platform more long-tail money with minimal cost is comparatively safe. Especially given that artists/labels do the grunt work of loading everything to the electronic platform and even for them th

When I found that interfaces/abstraction was way more critical to understand than recursion or obscure algorithms for most real projects. Half of the battle of starting (or understanding) any project is clarifying the interfaces in whi

I often wonder metabolic switching between e.g. fat vs carbs as energy sources would be a good way to force cells to perform some acrobatics and die if they have a distribution of mutations that make them metabolically inflexible. Might be

Also strongly agree with this. Never used to skip a meal, rarely used to exercise. Now most days I only eat dinner and often exercise beforehand. Would not have thought such a metabolic schedule would be realistic. On days when I have to e

I don’t think you parsed the paper quite accurately. It was just the same virus as the 50s. There was no gain of function. The mention of gain of function regards debated policy issues in 2015 when the paper was published.

H1N1 in 2009 may fit well with the ‘antigenic shift’ paradigm of influenza, where there is a reassortment of genes from different types of flu (which might both infect the same animal at once) that create a new hybrid to which there is litt

I’m not a programmer by trade so I exclusively work on smallish projects, not profit driven but rather interest driven. Percent of seriously considered side projects that I actually start: ~10-20%. Percent of projects started that are ‘fini

While there isn’t too much clamorous mainstream debate about the current strain (SARS-CoV-2), the first SARS escaped the lab several times: “SARS has not re-emerged naturally, but there have been six escapes from virology labs: one each in

Intuition can die often, but on the other hand many individual processes within immunology are somewhat well characterized as far as biology goes, and are amazing. The VDJ recombination process for B and T cell development is a stochastic-e

In a similar (even stranger?) vein, in the 1950s there were cyclops baby sheep related to maternal consumption of wild corn lillies. Many years later this led to discovery of the sonic hedgehog pathway and related targeted inhibitors like v

In Haskell you can generate an infinite list of all integers starting from 1 with [1..] This is both very succinct but for best use also requires a sufficient understanding of what goes on in the backend, which is true for many features of

I would say software integration is more like a docking mechanism between spacestation units that were designed in isolation by different countries than like snapping LEGO blocks. At least software pieces are products of human design and fa

I’ve often been intrigued at the sense of fascination, cultural and technological, directed towards the USSR on HN. I share the fascination. It may stem from an appeal to see engineered works from a system far different than our own both on

You could try to read a github project and look up syntax when you get stuck. But for languages, I just like to suck it up and go through the text version of the basic tutorial extremely fast. Or watch boiled down video tutorials at 2x. Tak
