I think it is just an illusion that Western governments can be changed. In reality, the deep state is an unstoppable machine underneath the facade of democracy. See perception management: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/

It’s possible that the United States will resemble China once its population reaches a comparable size. China may simply the next evolution of what the US will become, and if it happens slowly enough, no one will do anything about it. Conwa

I don’t think Chinese surveillance is worse for people outside of China. Your local government’s surveillance will always be worse, because it has the capability to act upon the data collected on you, since you are in their jurisdiction.

Precisely. We should not censor platforms that enable effective free speech to occur. TikTok is the one place that you can post a political video that doesn’t get removed within seconds for “violating community standards.” It’s blatantly ob

Welcome to the Red Scare 2.0, comrade. TikTok is under fire because it’s a piece of software from China. We’ve turned a blind eye to hardware security and the fact that the iPhone and nearly every other mainstream consumer device is manufa

Does the App Store or Play Store provide a checksum of the binary to compare to the self compiled binary?

Sounds like malware if you take it out of context. That’s unacceptable behavior (unless maybe there’s an opt-out for the mass notification).

That’s a valid question. Do these platforms provide users with signatures/checksums to reference?

How? Can you prove the binaries on the Play Store/App Store do not have backdoors? Most nation states engage in domestic surveillance. Here is a story about ToTok: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/22/us&#x

This my professional opinion since I lack the resources to perform a true analysis, so instead I speculate based on current nation state trends and the US government’s surveillance track record. Signal is a big red flag to me. I choose not

My industry forbids purchase of Chinese hardware (Lenovo, Huawei, ZTE, etc.) over security concerns. China has targeted various organizations in my industry and this hardware opens the back door wide open for them.

The fact that third-party addons can even touch sensitive settings in the user.js prefs is a massive security flaw in Mozilla's implementation of the WebExtensions API. Addons should be sandboxed/containerized or require privilege

From a meta-perspective, HackerNews is how I'm currently spending my time. Alas, it is a stopgap to a more pervasive problem in my life. If I weren't currently on HackerNews, I would (very literally) be spending my spare time wond

The only thing I'm missing is a C++ implementation of libp2p. Ethereum is the only example I've found that comes close, but it's poorly commented and only implements a small set of details of libp2p.
