Spot on. Everytime I have to debug dbus, udev, acpid or anything horrid like that, it throws me one step back towards freebsd. They just aren't part of the Unix philosophy. NT perhaps.

Yes we have disabled the local cache. Our build machines are not stateful - the environment is wiped before each build intentionally. We have had problems where maven caches are poisoned and the builds start failing randomly which cost us a

Very true regarding St Thomas' - that's where they took him. Very lucky, but not for the poor guy who got stabbed. Not sure what happened to him at the end of the day.

Spot on post. Last year replaced a maven shitfest with an old fashioned Makefile which calls javac and manual dependencies. The whole port process took about 2 hours. Integration and test run time has gone from 7 minutes (to drag all the ma

Yes this happened to my father. I remember the crunching sound of his ribs to this day. This was at waterloo station in London in 1993. He just keeled over. Fortunately for him, someone had just got stabbed 100 yards away so people were alr

That is one of those little stories which is just awesome. That's when you KNOW the machine. You just can't do that with anything these days. Even my HP50G calc is personality-free in that respect.

I have been the worst operator - a 12v car battery with a large file brushed across the terminals :) That interfered with EVERYTHING. 25 years later, an EE degree and 5 years working RF comms engineering, I realise what an asshat thing to d

I bet the FCC (or RCA in the UK) will love that :) The amount of noise and harmonics that come off that sort of transmitter will be horrible. At least chuck a bandpass on the end of it.

I've written software for all the main platforms apart from BB. My rationale is: iOS is closed / walled garden. Windows Phone is closed / walled garden BB is closed / walled garden. Android is a fragmented, buggy shit tip of an environment

The MBA seems to attract a certain type of person, which is my point. I'm an MEng myself but I don't see that type of person around the whole engineering scene.
