Or you could just learn and adapt as people always do and get used to having buttons with no borders, or the colors being slightly different, or whatever the issue is. I think it really is ridiculous how the userspace people will get into p

I cannot agree with it or your comment. I have seen these type of comments pop up in every Firefox thread on HN. It is so common for people to try to play armchair CEO. But when I actually dig into it, I have really never seen anyone with a

That was my initial thought as well, but if you read the rest of the article there actually is quite a lot of technical details. It's not just trashing developers. I think the title could probably be changed to be less inflammatory.

As someone who is currently implementing a compact theme for a different app, anything of that nature has a non-zero cost. Which is compounded by the number of designers you have working on the product who now all have to review every chang

I'm not a security engineer but I have attended a lot of talks by security people. And the feeling I get from them is: don't opt-out of security updates. You don't want that option, it is a lose-lose for everyone involved, in

Well I said this earlier but this is not specifically about my personal experience with shortcomings, although that was an influence. I have heard many of the same issues coming from large numbers of other people, and I think there is a rel

Please do not undo charitable interpretations. I intentionally put the phrase "I think" in that comment so it was clear that it was my opinion. I don't know how to make it any clearer than that, it is a thought that I had. It

Ok I see what you're saying. Sorry for the misunderstanding: the bugs here can't realistically be fixed. They keep popping up over and over again and they will for as long as the design stays flawed. It is the design that needs to

I have not done that, in fact I intentionally used the phrase "in my opinion" in my original comment so I wouldn't get this type of response. But I guess I didn't use it enough times.

I have already done that for quite a long time, that doesn't fix the problem, that just makes it so there is yet another half-assed and broken WM to add to the pile. Or should I say, graveyard, because so many of them have come and gon

In my opinion, all that stuff on MacOS (Amethyst, Rectangle, Spectacle, etc) is also broken in the same way. Apple's window manager has a built in fullscreen tiling mode that could actually be way better but is currently missing things

For 1, all of them are inadequate in the same way, because tiling is just not adequate for most use cases. Most desktop apps are not designed for tiling, and the few that work well with it, also work just fine with another system. For 2, if

I don't understand your analogy. If a smelter is using something in a bad or inefficient way and a smith is capable of explaining it to them, then that would be beneficial to do so. People do not have to do exactly the same job in the

I'm going to get flak for this but I'll say it anyway: tiling window managers are awful and broken, everybody who uses them on Linux knows it and either doesn't want to admit it or knows it and doesn't care. I get why th

Is that sarcasm? A key difference I would say is that the web is actually better because you can run javascript or WASM code in the browser, in X that would be the equivalent of the "server"...

All of that is extremely possible with a web app though, and most of it is probably done even easier with a web app. In fact that is the usual way to build a web app, make a server that does the heavy lifting and then make a GUI that runs i

You need to double buffer the clients or you will still get flickering and noticeable redraw. You can see this with older X clients. It actually is a protocol issue because X was explicitly designed to do this. You are presenting this as

Yeah you do if you want to have the same window span across monitors. And if you have non-integer DPI scaling then things will probably always be either blurry or inaccurate, that is unavoidable.

I'm really disappointed to see this get mentioned in this context, it's not relevant. At least on debian, ssh -Y and ssh -X has done the same thing since like 2013 because ssh -X is broken and causes clients to crash. The "sa

No, it's not factually false, those fall in the "pile of hacks" I mentioned, and none of them work in all cases, some of them are highly dependent on driver support which is spotty. I can show you various bug reports from the
