Let's put it this way: There is pretty compelling evidence that leaded gasoline reduces knocking in car engines, and that asbestos reduces fire deaths in buildings. No one's debating the direct goal of fluoride- it's the ex

While this is a noble thought, don't forget to give thought to your wife and baby. Informed spousal support is crucial to warding off postpartum depression, and keeping the marriage healthy requires a lot more work when there's a

When I started a software dev contract in a Southern California high-rise, I had to undergo 2 hours of earthquake safety training before I could start working. I think it would be unusual for any Bay Area employer to require any earthquake

Although it's only been about 800 years, Genghis Khan might form a worthy counterexample to that assertion, judging by his disproportionate impact on the human genome.

79% of all CS grad students are international. You may find a somewhat rich applicant pool of international talent that can get student visas but not work authorization. Fish in a barrel. My college advisor was Turkish. Over 75% of the gr

I seriously doubt it was a fired-up plant that manufactured the uptick. More likely, I wonder if their model considers the natural decay of other chlorofluorocarbons, like R-115, R-114, or, counterintuitively, R-12. It's probably reas

First, find a good marriage counselor. Most therapists in the US are actually pretty bad at marriage counseling, focusing mainly on women and children who have been victims of abuse or addiction. Because they're not used to having to

The dumbest questions begin with a disclaimer like the one used here. Yes, methane, especially from cows and livestock, is a contributor to global warming. Other sources of methane worthy of concern include oil and gas wells (apparently th

Many of the comments in here are getting hung up on efficiency. Do you know how efficient your car is? Your water heater? No, and it's not because those figures are important. What actually matters is how much it costs you to travel

This is probably best rephrased as an "Ask HN:". The -20C to 150C existing range is instructive- you don't need to hit both your extremes, merely occasionally deviate past those extremes. -20C for instance occurs throughout
