It’s a little scary that the same guy who makes these statements also can make decisions that may lead to war. Lets hope his other decisions are a little more fact based but I have my doubts.

I agree. Seems a lot of new kitchen devices seems to fail by either some plastic gears stripping or coming loose from the shaft. My mom has 50 or more year old stuff that still works but the newer devices all break. Even very expensive ones

I don’t know about this particular situation but I think it’s just a matter of politeness that somebody new should use his first weeks to try to understand the current situation before making too many suggestions. Also show your skills by d

Yeah. I hate situations where you have thought about something more than anybody else but you still have smartasses start questioning you after being exposed to the problem for a few seconds. I am fine with people asking questions but they

It’s pretty interesting that this document is secret and there is no mechanism to enforce it. It’s pretty much just a declaration of intent.

I think what they build doesn’t run on any probe but on Earth so the world doesn’t go under if they make mistakes . It’s the same in medical. The closer you get to the patient the more regulation you get.

I work in medical devices and without off label use by doctors it would be really hard and expensive to innovate and explore new indications. Maybe there should be some registry and published information but I don’t see an alternative.

I think Switzerland with its long history of democratic participation has developed a pretty mature population that generally makes (relatively) informed decisions. If you introduced this in the US I bet people would vote for abolishing tax

Agreed. I have talked to people at JPL and all their tools are completely outdated, they have no room for creativity and everything they do is constantly watched and reviewed. Unless you are way up in leadership this doesn’t seem much fun.

Considering how much camera sensors have improved in the last few years I wonder how outdated these sensors are (or not) Edit: makes me also wonder if with all the delays they upgrade any equipment in the meantime.

You have to have a balance or you will reach a point where the software is so compromised it can’t support the business.

With overthrown I guess I also meant things like antitrust regulation in the early 1900s or the union movement which was reduced power of the robber barons. This doesn’t always have to be violent. Not sure what better word could be used ins

I thought this has been the course of history for a long time. Elites take more and more for themselves until they push things too far and they get overthrown. Then the cycle starts again with a different elite.

That’s true. A lot of people think that being customer centric means to exactly do what the customer says. But sometimes you have to say “no” or propose different ways to achieve their goals so you can keep the software architecture halfway

I have a similar plan but progress is slow in medical devices and our execs tend to believe salespeople more than our engineers so it will take a while to convince people to invest in a multi-people multi-year effort.
