I use a lookup table for arithmetic. Figuring out 5*3 would take me a long time if I didn’t know already.

It’s probably pretty difficult to square their anti immigration stance with their claim of being business friendly if you consider that most businesses love cheap immigrants. Hard to shape this into a coherent policy.

Very interesting. I guess it shows you always have to read stuff yourself before believing anything . Does this mean that if you run a site where people enter their health data you are not really bound by HIPPA? Makes me wonder about som

I don't think that's necessarily true. It's just that items designed for the elderly are designed by young people who think this is what elderly people need. My mom uses quite a few items that are supposed to be designed for

Especially with dementia you can live a very long time. I have watched this with my dad now for more than 10 years and he may outlive my mom even though his mental capacity is not there anymore.

Good point! Looking at the wings of a regular airplane it definitely would be a pretty crazy ride sitting out there while the plane is banking.

With the push to more and more iCloud I would assume they have a lot of data but I am not sure.

I agree. They are sitting on more and more data they will be very tempted to use if they can’t hit their growth rates in the future. It would be better if no single entity had that much data.

The crazy thing is that often these people have 150+ hp cars that can accelerate really well if you push the throttle just a little bit.

I am German and I have no problems with the Autobahn but it always takes me a while to get used to the speed when I am back. I can easily see how it's frightening for people.

"People here are amazed when I tell that story, 120 in a Honda? Is that safe?" Just watch out for the crummy all season tires cars in the US have. I don't trust those. Otherwise no problem.

Maybe it’s about engineering in general. The marketing or project manager types I know personally definitely have a much simpler hiring process. They don’t have to study algorithms ahead or do homework projects.

Just look at the hiring process. Almost no other profession accepts a lengthy hiring process as crazy as it is for software engineering now. And the meanest interviewers are fellow engineers. Us engineers are often too hard on each other wh

I think the solution should be to have better excel reverse engineering tools. I have seen plenty of crazy complex spreadsheets that had hit a wall and were hard to refactor but the solution would never have happened if they hadn’t had exce

I think Powershell made a big mistake going with verb first. I know I want to do something with group but when I type group there is no auto complete. Now I type “add” and I get dozens or hundreds of suggestions which makes auto complete al

Let’s stop idolizing or demonizing any big companies. Basically they are all the same. They may look friendly or hostile from time to time. But in the end they are not your friend and should be viewed with skepticism because of the power th

This may be interesting. Script languages generally aren’t typed but maybe a language with very good type inference may feel like it’s untyped.

I think consenting explicitly to a 10 hour day would be a mistake. Remote work shouldn’t be a privilege you pay for with more work. When I work from home I generally set a goal to finish something that day. If it takes longer than 8 hours I

I agree that remote work needs a certain personality type. You need to be self sufficient but also be willing to reach out proactively when you have problems and not keep struggling in silence as I have seen before. This is a difficult bal
