Maybe it would be better to add this automatically, even if it’s hidden from the user? I imagine this would match the intent of most uses.

The current iOS 4.2 does not include any standalone Dictionary apps, AFAIK. I believe "dictionary" here refers to the system’s built-in spelling autocorrect and suggestion engine, which lacks definitions.

Thunderbolt is actually based on the Mini DisplayPort specification. If anything, Apple will add this to the iPad, but it will look quite different than USB. The next iPad, rumored for September of this year, is more likely to include major

I have difficulty defending Apple in this matter, but yours is an inaccurate comparison. Google did not create the internet. On the other hand, Apple created the iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches on which these apps (potentially) thrive, and

I would suggest publishing an RSS feed for your posts, because I probably won’t remember to check your website again. Either way, please keep submitting updates to HN. Looking at your site, you seem to be using a custom blog engine. Any det

My least-favorite trend in Mac app design: using Helvetica instead of Lucida Grande, the system font, often because Helvetica is the default on iOS (cf. Reeder, a Mac port of an iOS app). Why is this wrong? 1) Lucida Grande was optimized fo

Windows vs. Mac is now Android vs. iPhone. Microsoft slacked off, and lost its place to the equally-ambitious Google. Desktop Linux never had a Google to push its adoption.

I’m fascinated by the goal of making websites easier to create (most existing solutions are just crummy). Please post details of your app when you have something to show!

Update: Woz gave Engadget clarification, saying: "Almost every app I have is better on the iPhone. [He expects Android] "to be a lot like Windows... it can get greater marketshare and still be crappy." http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/1

This is another case of Apple not allowing third-party apps the same features of it’s own apps (the previous privilege being multitasking, now mostly allowed). This disparity makes it hard for a developer like Marco, who is only trying foll

I love Keynote on the Mac, but I also love trying new software. I just tried to build it without success on Mac OS 10.6 using Ant 1.8.1. Any suggestions? - I cloned the Mercurial repo (my first time with a VCS), - I downloaded Ant [1], inst

I agree that there should be more explicit citation for this article. The original source is IDC [1], who says the mobile phone market is: 1. Nokia, 32.4% 2. Samsung, 21.0% 3. LG Electronics, 8.3% 4. Apple, 4.1% 5. R.I.M., 3.6%

You make a good argument for resolution independence in Mac OS X — which would allow the user to resize interface elements on-demand, without loss of image quality. Apple is working on this, but has not provided an indication of when it wil

Indeed, “modest” is very much an understatement to describe Mac sales :) Everything is relative, and in the greater market context, Macs are strong. But among Apple’s products, the iPhone brings revenue equal to Macs, and arguably greater p
