I would suggest that most grandparents don't want to look after their grandkids for 40 hours a week. And for that matter, many grandparents have jobs of their own – the average age of a first time grandparent in the USA is 50.

I think the generous claim would be that given that Puerto Rico has a manufacturing dominated economy, if foreign flagged vessels could pick up goods there and take them on to the USA, they would be more likely to build routes that included

The arguments I've seen are: a) you would get more competition / lower prices on trade routes from the US to PR. b) foreign flagged vessels could stop in PR on their way to the US, drop off PR goods, and load PR manufactured goods

That is already how it works. Transpacific eastbound ships typically call at LA/Long Beach, Oakland, and Seattle before returning to Asia. They just can't pick up cargo at any of those stops and then drop it off at another US port

Although I do think that elements of the Jones Act make sense to repeal (the shipbuilding aspects are an example of something that has really bad outcomes on the whole), I think there are also aspects that ought to be retained and enhanced.

I find the premise of this... bizarre, I guess? Reddit is a site that lets you create your own community about whatever (within some pretty permissive ToS grounds) you want and run it however you want. Why would you get paid for running you

Probably gonna get blacklisted by someone for this, but it’s astonishing to me that people can (with a straight face) say this at one moment then at another claim there’s no reason software engineers should ever unionize since they get paid

BlackRock absolutely votes. The concern is arguably the _opposite_: in the index model ownership is concentrated in a few large institutions with very broad diversification, which creates some odd incentives. Matt Levine has a bunch of arti

Unless there’s something weird about that cooktop, you almost certainly don’t need new pans. Copper doesn’t work, but cast iron, carbon steel, stainless steel all do.

No, in English this is a very common phrasing in some sports. For instance, major running events typically have an “elite” start vs the mass start for non-elites. And elite is the exact word used.

Too late to edit, but I just want to reiterate: I don’t actually agree with this, I’m just trying to make the case. All the counterpoints about whether 10% is accurate, whether you get the right 10%, whether they’re evenly distributed, whet

The title here is misleading (there's no 2022 in the linked page). The joke is that this was released in 2016 when the new MBP with the touch bar came out, and was reviewing the _previous_ version as an improvement over the new one. I
