The terrain is bounded by walls (a design decision to keep users from getting too far away from portals) but you can discover new palettes and worlds forever, by continuing to step through unexplored portals.

Thanks! All of the graphics, colour palettes and sounds are procedurally generated which makes the game small in file size and endless to explore.

Mostly through experimentation. I ended up with a set of notes that I liked and give enough variety when played semi-randomly, while still keeping with the happy/uplifting mood of the game.

Glad you caught the reference! I was born in Toronto and Trinity Bellwoods is one of my favourite spots in the summer. The name also has a second meaning with the sound as you noted. I can't take credit, it was @mlissa_h who suggested

Thank you! This is all in JavaScript with some open source tools I'm building[1]. I write about my process in a few places: often on Twitter, recently in a TinyLetter, and occasionally more in-depth on my blog[2]. I'd suggest Tim

Nice to see generative art discussed on the frontpage. :) I think the next several years will be really interesting for generative art. Consumers are getting more interested in it, and some of our tools and collective knowledge has really g

These issues apply to all forms of art. An artist can spend a few minutes splashing paint on a canvas and decide whether or not to call it art. And, depending on the context and audience, it may or may not be perceived as art. I don't

I may be misunderstanding your comment, but what exactly is the benefit? Advertising websites can just switch to the new API to achieve autoplay audio, meanwhile all old sites will have a poor user experience as they will require additional

This is terrible. Chrome responded to a major breaking change by simply... delaying it? The exact same problems will be faced come October.

I don't know Cities: Skylines but I imagine each city rendering engine has its own set of challenges and performance considerations. Generally my point is: graphics programming isn't always trivial, and it takes time/practice

The geometry in this demo already is static. The app is vertex bound since the geometry has 11 million vertices, which is not trivial for any GPU to render.

WebGL is great for most use cases, and generally pretty comparable to OpenGL in terms of performance. This vis is rendering ~11 million vertices which is quite a bit for any GPU to render. There are some optimizations that could be made — c

Glad you are enjoying budo! It's a little tool that I built before Webpack became so popular, yet I'm still finding myself using it daily for the last couple years. I'm actually working on some new tools that combines my favo

Have you tried budo[1]? I am the author, so very obviously biased, but the tool has a small following among some creative developers since it’s really quick and easy to work with. Most of my projects don’t need the scalability of Facebook o
