Best article I've read this year. (Haha, but it's very good, if a little burdened with weird terminology.) I have been through some similar experiences myself. Not as bad, but enough to find OP's story not-really-remarkable.

I agree. After watching the Go developers push back against noisy changes, I'm much more appreciative of determined simplicity in language design. > If I see c# code today I don't understand what it does. I am not surprised. Th

My kids are teenagers now, I'm looking at this too. I'm pretty sure that going to college with only a fuzzy idea of why you're there and what you're expecting to get out of it isn't a smart move any more. Me and a w

We can't be sure, and they won't always be perfectly honest, but if you're billing yourself as a fact checker, you're trying to appeal to people who are interested in the truth in the first place. You can apply some spi

This is indeed the worst. By itself it is enough to make me want to switch. It's not the only thing, though. Win 10 is a decent OS in most ways, but there are too many places where it does things that I don't want and I can't

I see "free speech" with scare quotes around it from left leaning people fairly often. Much of the left is pretty happy with the idea of blacklisting and no platforming people now. (They weren't so happy about it in the McCar

You might check out Sil, which is set in Middle Earth and is supposed to be truer to the spirit of Tolkien. I've also heard it is good as a game. Haven't played it myself.

Perhaps your idea of socialism, but not many others' ideas. That's the problem. A lot of people who cheer for socialism believe capitalism, in the sense of private property in the means of production, is a problem and should be ab

I would say all 10 are clearly capitalist. All have strong recognition of property rights including private property in the means of production. It is unfortunate that political terminology is muddy enough to allow for this sort of confusio

Another thought about ADD/ADHD in the olden days. I'm inclined to doubt that these traits could have been a serious handicap in earlier times if we didn't really notice this as a template of behavior until recently. People ha

At least sometimes kids with ADD symptoms are capable of very focused attention on the things they're actually interested in.

We did also get some hundreds of thousands of immigrants (boat people) in the 1980s, I think mostly without suitcases. My impression (casual) is they have done fairly well.

Location makes a big difference. I live in the Midwest and there aren't many $125K positions out here. But a 3 BR house in good shape in a decent neighborhood can be less than 100K. Freelancing at $~60/hour * ~30 hours/week c

Nice writing. "When you’re young, you want things: work, love, children. When you reach middle age, you want to want things."

I agree with this, mostly, but I am also optimistic about what we'll see in the future. There are lots more little studios making niche games and trying out new ideas than there were just a few years ago. I bet we'll see some RPGs

Roughly speaking, it looks to me like younger people do not want to get married, and are in fact choosing partnerships that are expected to be only semi permanent instead. The idea of traditional, permanent marriage is taking on stuffy and
