Could just be local loop latency, in VDSL or DOCSIS you can get 5-15ms of latency just in your first 1KM. London (e.g Telehouse) > Amsterdam is only about 7ms.

I think it depends, honestly. As a startup you could be using civo or katapult as clouds and be getting almost everything you need. I think the main issue is actually network effect; easy to hire people who know AWS, easy to explain AWS arc

Sadly, I agree until we get SMRs (I think we are few years off). Obviously it would be more ideal to use grid+solar with curtailment but not super realistic.

In general terms I think that very small, very cheap hosts can use secondhand hardware, think DDR3/4 where RAM is still affordable. The 'Great' deals you see are mostly that. There are still $6/month for 2core/4GB V

Frankfurt is less than a tenth the size, I'm not sure it's really a comparison. I found Berlin to be no better/slightly worse.

Let's be honest if this was a European company it would be capped by law at 5-10%. Problem is who has an incentive to do the right thing here? Not apple and certainly not the US government (most of this revenue comes from outside the U

Incentives (for western Governments) are strong to show population has grown as little as possible, because it reduces stats on (mostly illegal) immigration, and improves GDP-per capita. I think it is probably healthy to explore if these in

Every single time I've been in Madrid the metro has been on strike. Every time. They run about 50-60% of services which means everything is slow and packed. I would actually say it's one of the worst in europe in my (I guess limit

The Piccadilly Line was opened in 1906 for gods sake, forgive them for not catering to people with 3 suitcases very well! That's part of the reason we built the Elizabeth Line, to enable a better transport option for people coming into

I've lived in and visted many other cities in Europe. Public transport is often much cheaper than London, but there's few examples where I'd really say it was /better/. Can you think of an example?

True, but it's not london public transport (e.g not TFL) and that may actually be the only reason it's bad. Look what happened when TFL took over national rail services inside london (silverlink > overground).

Respect this commitment. I think to be honest I'd only ever consider hosting a tile server if I was actually rendering data on the tiles or there was something 'special' about them (e.g style). Using $whatever hosted tiles ar

Yes, since you have to provide proof of age to watch porn now most people have a VPN. I'm not sure I advocate blocking it, just it would not particularly bother me incrementally at this point, but it would be unfair to single X out as

Covering order/notice is required yes. Many ISPs who don't have one and the government don't bother as they'd be paying implementation costs.

We don't actually really have the ability to hard block stuff. ISPs can be subject to court orders individually but the costs of implementation are bourne by the third-party or government so they don't like doing it. Best case you

That would unironically be a good way of dealing with this. However it would probably be seen as just as hostile. I'm very against banning websites, however social media as a whole is doing detrimental harm to children and adults alike

This is fair, but it restricts the number of open source contributors massively if that's the criteria. Let's say I'm a company and I have this library I've developed at enormous expense. The company is happy to share it

Click a unused fibre and drag it to an empty 'splice holder' then do the same on the other side. You can also use double tap on mobile I think. Sorry! In practice manual usage is normally very rare, these are typically auto genera

I’m speaking mainly within the context of telecom field splicing - the numbers I mentioned are typical for that application in my experience. You’re only sending on the order of 5 mW down a fiber, so none of those high-power concerns apply.

Of course, but a splitter in a PON network or a WDM device are perhaps better examples of things that are hacky to model. Multi-fibre cables and splices are another. Netbox is great for some simple applications, and it's fantastic OSS,
