Making driving illegal for everybody would certainly save people from drunk drivers too. Do you think that's a good idea?

I have a Toyota Camry with lane detection. If it thinks you're on the edge of the lane, it beeps at you and gives the steering wheel a gentle nudge. I think they've given it a perfect balance, because the nudge really is gentle

You do know that plants pull their nutrients from the soil, right? How is a plant to differentiate a nutrient from a poison?

Do you know why they add iodine to (iodized) salt? The nuclear testing we did way back when put so much radioactive iodine into the atmosphere, it was getting into the soil and taken up by the plants we were eating. The body excretes exce

One end of the element will be neutral and the other end will be hot. No way to avoid that, no matter how you change the plug - the voltage differential is how you get the current that generates heat.

In the U.S. the manufacturers have figured out that they can make more money selling an "extended warranty" than they can selling the product itself. So the included warranty is as short as they think they can get away with, to e

At some point in the chain it's probably still analog, but the question is where's the switch? I think the compression scheme is very dependent on comparing adjacent frames, so you couldn't have compression until the point w

If you go back far enough, there was no "normal". 40 years might not be far enough back. Different equipment did things differently. Which was O and which was 0 was a matter of convention, there weren't any rules for it an

I never said slashed zeros were unknown, just that conventions hadn't settled yet and were far from universal. Sometime you got a dot in the middle instead of a slash. I don't know if OCR even existed back when this was published

In 1971, the idea of selling software was completely foreign. If it was important software like a compiler or OS, it came with the computer you just spent millions on. If it was important software that you needed to run your business, you

In the early days, the important thing was to be able to distinguish between zero and oh. There was no standard yet established for the best way to do that. At least it was better than typewriters, which didn't have zero or one keys

Raw histograms are a no brainer, I don't understand why this isn't already commonplace. 16 bit raw is another matter. If you're not getting 16 bits of dynamic range from the pixels, all you'd be doing is getting a more

That's the thing that's most baffling to me. It seems like GPS as a feature would cost nearly nothing in money or space inside the camera, but it's still extremely rare. Pentax had it in the K-3 II but dropped it for the K-

I was surprised by my late 1970's era receiver value a couple of years ago (Technics SA-400). I ended up selling it to a coworker for probably half of what it would have fetched on Ebay.

The code for BMP isn't very complicated, the hard part is knowing all the rules and corner cases. Like the 4-byte alignment you mentioned, or the fact that the rows are in reverse order of what you'd expect (bottom up).
