When we built our house in 2000, my wife worked for a company that was doing a cross promotion with GE so we got a good discount on their appliances and fitted the whole house with them. Every single one has been nothing but trouble, and w

I learned years ago to avoid anything from Magnavox, after getting some real junk with that name attached. It was really obvious that the name was being abused to get trust for products that didn't deserve it.

I recently had the best interview experience of my life from an interviewer who had this philosophy. He's a professional interviewer who's done thousands of interviews over the past few years. He feels that the best way to gauge

I once failed an interview, and I think it was because the interviewer laid a trap for me. He asked if I would use such-and-so algorithm to solve a particular problem, and I said sure. I had never heard of such-and-so algorithm, but I fig

It's a great insight, but anecdotally dating sites aren't a great way to find a mate. I know two people who found their spouse through a dating site. The first was forced to get a divorce after his wife tried to kill him and near

I once had an interviewer ask me an obscure C++ question. I didn't know the answer, so I reversed it and asked if he knew. He did, and it taught me something I didn't know before. No, I didn't get the job. I no longer eve

You're probably right, but it pains me to admit it. I would never make up some BS just to get through an interview, it's not in my nature.

I never got to attend that all-hands meeting. The company scheduled two meetings at the same time - one all-hands, except for about 10 of us who were scheduled for the other one. It didn't take too much imagination to figure out what

In the U.S. sometimes your first hint of an impending layoff is when you're asked to train your replacement. And sometimes the layoff means the project you were working on is being cancelled. My own most recent experience is that the

I know anecdata is worthless, but we're coming up on the anniversary of my latest layoff so it's still fresh in my mind. It was Nov. 9, a Monday. And of course I wasn't alone. Going postal wasn't an option, everybody w

In a capitalist society, when you find something that people are willing to spend above average on, there's usually no shortage of providers trying to produce it. Why isn't that happening in this case?

The only reason Minecraft doesn't have microtransactions is because they haven't gotten around to it yet. I recently interviewed for a position on the team that's going to make it happen.

When I was in college with a time-sharing system, someone as a joke removed all the keycaps from one of the CRTs. Didn't stop me, I'm a good enough touch typist that I just sat down and started using it. Good typing skills are a

Except that tzdata doesn't store offset rules for every city. You still need to know which city represents your location, which is just as arbitrary as some random timezone code. Every once in a while zone boundaries or local zone ru

Timezones can change when specified by continent/city too. The bigger problem with three-letter zone names is that they're not unique. I found 3 different definitions of CST for example.
