I have had similar thoughts as well. Assuming FTL isn’t possible, at some point it wouldn’t make sense to have a cohesive system. Say, there’s an outpost that is 30 years away by the fastest spacecraft.

Such an interesting perspective! It would be nice to see evolution sped up as well, or any process that seems unchanging for less than a few thousands of years.

It’s good the author mentions Persian specifically, given most of the influential mathematicians and scientists who comprised the Islamic Golden Age were Persian.

Al-Khwarizmi was Persian, not Arab. Though he did produce much of his work in Arabic which might cause the confusion.

I’m sure you can find horrible code bases in any arrangement. I will say that a good team will tend to be better for more projects than two good teams (fe/be). There certainly are cases where a split will make sense and be much better,

Well said. The BE / FE split has been a really bad experiment. It has exasperated the issue where the FE is overly complex because there are people on a FE team, so they toil away and just add complexity. It is also problematic that we

Well said. I should stop using social media, the level of discourse is low and anti-intellectualism is rampant. I do think the world would benefit from more amateur researchers.

Following Clean Code is not the right way to develop software in any stage of the project. It is a few opinions of someone who has not actually written any code of substance. In addition to Clean Code being a bad approach, it can also be a

Uncle Bob has been a horrible influence on our industry, and we’re expressing that. He has not actually worked on anything but yet he’s been able to make some money selling his inexperienced opinions.

Great point. Also, Krapivin was working on another paper co-authored by his former professor. He in fact was not working from ignorance. And like you said, most of everyone didn’t know anything about this conjecture, so ignorance certainly

Well said. I really dislike the narrative here, that ignorance is something that leads to discovery. One, the poster gives two examples, as if there's something we should gain for such a small sample. In addition to that, one of the ex

Ramanujan wasn’t poor. He went to school and had access to many math books which he studied and was recognized as a child prodigy early on.

This myth of him just coming up with results without all the hard studying he did is often repeated. His results are made to be seen as impossibly hard and his impact is overstated. Galois solved a problem that was open for 350 years, he ma

Ramanujan is obviously very gifted and was able to do exceptionally well given his circumstances, but to put him higher than those that you listed is wrong to me. There are many more mathematicians who solved problems that have more impact

BILLY bookcases are very sturdy, have you seen problems with them? I do recommend the thinner ones over the wider ones because the wider ones tend to sag in the middle if you have a lot of weight on them.
