All the technology stuff is great, but as for this being the city of the future? Pass! It's far to spread out. It's not very walkable. There's too much space dedicated to parking. etc. It fails almost every test for being a good city.

The various streaming packages are pretty good for live sports IF you live outside your home teams region AND your team isn't featured on national broadcasts often (applies to the NHL for sure, not sure about the others). NHL Game Center Li

Yup, great if it works for you and is convenient. My wife and I have folding bikes that we use to bike to BART (closer than any casual carpool pickup). When we lived in SF my wife walked to work and I took a bus. So our daily commute cost w

My wife and I moved to Oakland in October. The reasons we moved were basically: - We wanted more interior space. Our SF loft was awesome, but was one giant room, and we wanted to be able to have guests and give them (and us) some privacy.

The main Rails app that I work in is a medium sized app and runs at 220mb memory usage on a dyno on averae. It spikes to the 350mb range occasionally probably from image generation with rmagick or PDF generation.

If you are using the NewRelic add-on you can go to the "dynos" tab and see the memory footprint of your application over time. The Heroku memory cap is 512mb, so if you stay a decent amount of space clear of that then you are likely to be

You are definitely correct. My post was a little snarky and written way too quickly to get any real point across. My real point is that, regardless of whether or not wage stagnation has occurred, the "middle class" is not in a good positio

What about happiness? Hope for the future? Ability to have your spouse raise the kids at home while you earned enough to pay for a house and car? And the idea that life expectancy is what counts is absurd. 79 years of fighting for jobs w

Oops, didn't mean your directions but the OP's, of course. Just thought this thread was a good place for the answer and you had a nicely formatted pyramid. And, for the record, I'm a programmer, think I'm reasonably intelligent, and still

This phrase: "...adding the two numbers to the right and left of it on the row above it..." Doesn't make a whole lot of sense. What is the "it"? row 1: is obviously easy. row 2: I think you are adding 0 to 1 and 1 to 0 to get 1 and 1 row 3

Median household income in the US is $52,762. $75,000 is roughly the 70th percentile. $75,000 is A LOT of money. It amazes me how skewed peoples views of income are here at HN. Most of us live in a fantasy land of $100+k jobs, stock opti

The big difference is that NFL players are typically drafted at the age of 22 after they've gone through college. NHL players are typically drafted at 18. Very few of them go the NCAA route. Those that do go that route can't be paid in an

Also remove the cap at which you no longer collect SS from payrolls. It's something around $105,000. You don't get taxed for SS on any income past that amount. The SS tax structure is one of the most regressive taxes we have.

I just moved in to a house that has a gas on-demand hot water heater and I basically can't figure out why we use so much energy to keep gallons of hot water on hand all the time. It just doesn't make any sense to me. I think the upfront c
