The reason I'm low confidence on pay is because I think there will be even more disparity among programmer salaries and the median will be far lower. Will it be possible to make a million a year as an engineer in 30 years (forget infla

Probably in the same way that VR does...it comes in waves. 3D has been around for a while, and every now and then it resurges. It has more to do with marketing forces to excite people about going to the theater than anything. And yes, I sus

Lately, I've been thinking about the role of nihilism as a natural force in society and its use as a tool of renewal. At its best, it's a power to take only that which strengthens so that we don't take on the collective emoti

I'd argue the opposite. If it's insignificant at all, it's only because of our response to it. Lots of people worked very, very hard for us to sit here typing "it wasn't that bad" unless you believe that our gl

I think there's a fallacy here in that "because covid's impact wasn't great, covid wasn't that bad." Any time we have to mobilize a lot of effort to head off the worst outcome, there's a tendency to say &q

The pandemic taught me a lot about apocalypse. While people are a lot slower to buy into collective action and changing their way of life than I thought, society is far more robust than I expected. Covid looked nothing like a pandemic film,

I was nodding along, but it occurs to me that most RPGs have a sanctioned money -> in game currency mechanic. As long as you can draw a line from being able to give the game money and use it for a gambling mechanic, there’s the potential

In my experience, Scrum is something leadership and project managers never really commit to ("agile with a small 'a'") and never really adhere to its principles. When it inevitably fails, they blame agile and go back to

I used this exact method a decade ago (thanks statistics 101) to estimate and got 10% with a minuscule margin of error. That was a decade ago though.

I can’t believe it’s been 24 years. I remember exploring 0sil8 way back when and being inspired by the cool things you could do with html. How time flies.

Imagine if our justice system worked like this, where you could get convicted without ever seeing the evidence against you because it would reveal the methods the police used. I realize it’s not entirely the same thing, but it’s also not en

I tend to agree. While I think the sample size is fine, the way perceived positivity and perceived pleasure were measured seems pretty subjective in a way I find hard to generalize. The paper does seem awfully suggestive, though. Worthy of

While I agree on story, encounters, dungeons, and puzzles are harder on the fly. You can procedurally generate a dungeon these days and there’s lots of encounter generators now, but wasn’t always so easy.

As a forever DM, I'm impressed by this guy's fortitude. Coming up with an interesting session can take a good deal of time. In my experience, the amount of prep time you need is at least half of what the length of the session is.

When applied correctly; otherwise it's just words. If you're using introversion or extroversion as a stand-in for "likes remote work" and "doesn't like remote work," then I find it neither helpful nor scie

I'm not sure you can make a successful social network in 2022 without financial incentives for creators to make good content. Anyone good at making content online is getting paid for it. The novelty of putting things online for free wo

The older I've gotten, the less I find the introvert/extrovert deliniation useful. It's a characterization that brings a ton of assumptions to it, especially when employed in a Myers-Briggs-like fashion like this article is.

Disney has struggled to make software part of its DNA, but they've made great strides. As legacy companies go, they've done it better and faster than most. Gaming is a whole other thing. After Disney Infinity, they embarked on a p

This, I think, is the heart of advice heard so often: "don't keep score." If balancing our emotional checkbook is more important than harmony with our partner, we care about something more than our marriage. I'm no exper
