As someone who also used Hypercard, I tend to agree. There's a reason we aren't still talking about Hypercard today the way it was talked about then, but it was a different time. We were so much more enamored with software's

I tend to agree with you. Hard to unpack all this nuance in an HN comment. I've found that there's a middle ground between "making" a child do something and being involved in their life.

There's a lot here to unpack, but I don't believe this is a red flag. CS is not a "gimme" major. If he's continuing to pursue it and the college isn't weeding him out, then he's clearly doing alright and h

I believe they updated the EULA long before that, but Reforged got a lot of press about it since it represents such a contrast between yesterday's games and today's.

In another place and time, a similar circumstance is what led Blizzard to unintentionally provide the tools for inspiring the MOBA genre, which spawned League of Legends and DOTA2. That altered games forever. You'll notice few games sh

You beat me to this comment. That's not even the most dubious thing on this page. No revenue cuts? Make money day one without viewers? I don't understand where the incentives are here. I suspect there isn't any tech at all ye

We haven't seen a paradigm shift in search since 2000 when Google came on the scene. If y'all don't remember what it was like back then, it unlocked a new era in information retrieval. It made other engines like Alta Vista ir

I don't think that's a fediverse problem. Nothing is stopping a server from implementing OpenID or some other centralized identity solution. However, these things don't happen for a reason.

This is arguably a client issue and not a federation issue. In the days of instant messaging we had no problem managing our AIM, ICQ, MSN, etc all in Trillian. We manage lots of accounts all the time anyway. The alternative is we revive Ope

This is not a bug. It's a feature. You see this today in subreddits, twitch channels, and discord servers, and the community is better for it. Places with community moderation have higher levels of engagement. I'm one of those peo

Factor into this the consolidation of so many industries, and if you happen to run afoul of one company you've effecively become a pariah. Getting banned from Google is bad enough. There is certainly a line that needs to be drawn, sinc

Yes, this is a real thing that will happen. However, this is no different than a popular website like, say, HN, linking to someone's hack project and giving it the hug of death. This stuff happens, and if any operational element boils

I've heard it differently, but is a corollary: bad tools make it easy for bad developers to do bad things. Good tools make it easy for bad developers to do good things.

A long time ago we discovered Twitter used a round robin of three servers for assigning IDs to tweets. We inferred the round robin was done by doing mod 3 of a signed int32, and because that space doesn't divide neatly by two it meant

I fail to see how the means of acquiring exclusivity matters if the outcome is the same. Would this feel different if Microsoft slowly acquired exclusivity of these franchises over 20 years instead of in a single day?
