I feel that everyone gets the point backwards. If we were in a videogame, you would be an NPC: you don't have a person controlling you and don't know anything about the world outside the world.

> Errors are hard to decipher. Have you tried adding the `-file-line-error` compilation option? The errors are still unreadable, but they become 1000% easier to debug.

Unrelated to the topic, but you are making a good decision. Cost of living in London is not too different from SF, but FAANG salaries are still ridiculously high here and quality of life is considerably better. You'll have less savings

One of my local pubs was open today with the caveat that people has to drink outside. There were enough people outside to make it impossible to have everyone at 2m distance, but for a second I considered breaking social distancing for drink

I used TST for some time until I realised that the vast majority of the time I just needed 2 layers of open tabs, which are perfectly represented by tabs and windows. Aggressively closing unused tabs has been much better for my organisation

Hey now, EasyJet's in flight food is actually really good. I always found it interesting how they have much better tea than British Airways.

Is it really? The Google thing was part of the htps for Google Fiber, a now-abandoned promising Google Project. The rest of the things sound like predictions you could make for 2030.

I used to play Minecraft when it was released in ~2010, before there were maps or beds. I remember building pillars in my constructions and other interesting places so I would be able to spot them from afar. It felt like a nice way to not g

Working from home for the past 3 months taught me that a lot of my constant tiredness and apathy came from the constant noise you get in an open office. Some people can't handle being productive in a extremely loud, and extremely brigh

What I wrote wasn't very understandable. In most languages, like C++, a < b < c ends up comparing a boolean to an integer. This should be a type error, but isn't.

The only correct way to parse `a < b < c` for numbers is throwing a type error. Python comes second for source code niceness, allowing you to compare numbers to booleans is common and shouldn't be.

Unicode has a lot of old "markup" symbols in typography, like the right pointy finger ([1], example in [2]). I see the external link symbol as a widely-used markup symbol of the current age, and it could reasonably be in Unicode.

0.999...9 with a countable finite amount of nines is clearly less than 1. 0.999... with infinite nines is equal to 1.

Let's try a naïve inductive proof of 0.999… ≠ 1. Base case: Given 𝑎⁰ = 0, 𝑎⁰ ≠ 1. Inductive case: Given 𝑎ⁿ⁺¹ = 1 - (1 - 𝑎ⁿ) / 10, 𝑎ⁿ ≠ 1 ⇒ 𝑎ⁿ⁺¹ ≠ 1 This proves that for every 𝑎ⁿ = 0.999…9, there's an 𝑎ⁿ⁺¹ that's

If we say that infinitesimals exist, it still happens that 1 = 0.999…. It just happens that 0.999 ≠ 1 - 𝛚. 0.999… = 1 is a property of the way we write some rational numbers, not of the number system itself.

The worst part about SQL is statement order. IIRC most SQL engines do FROM → WHERE → GROUP BY → HAVING → ORDER BY → SELECT → LIMIT → UNION, which is why you can SELECT after ORDER BY in the previous example but not after union. If I were to

`min` and `max` operate on semigroups, not on monoids. They don't have to have a default value, and any nicely strongly typed language should prevent them from acting on empty lists. You could invent a monoid instance of `float` for `&
