Most of the earlier 83’s had ROMs.

There's still a bazillion 83/84 devices out there which have absolutely no way of updating the OS.

Yeah had a couple. Flakey as hell and tend to die after a few months if they even work at all.

The thing that killed it for me was buying an Apple TV and then finding out half the content didn’t work because my TV didn’t support some particular fucked up combination of HDCP. I wasn’t about to buy a new TV just to get a copy protectio

It’s not hard to manage it. I managed it before my computers even had hard disks.

I have roughly the same requirements. For me it worked out more time and cost efficient to just leave the PC on. Logistics, management and maintenance were a pain when I had a NAS.

Exactly that. Only 15mbits up here but that’s fine for incremental backup. Recovery story is better which is the often forgotten bit. Downtime during recovery is a proper pain.

Most RAID solutions I’ve seen in SOHO environments are 2 bay Qnap etc. Usually top out at 2TiB online. I’d argue anything larger is exceptional. <10% population.

It’s actually the other way round I have found. I suggest you have a look around at other sources. Rust tends to go clunk at spin up time and that’s it. SSDs soft fail first due to reallocations but are still readable.

Add a NAS unit to that cost and the recovery time, dire random access time to your estimations and it works out. I’ve had to bounce around terabytes of crap on spinning rust for years. One nice XFS to XFS copy job took 2 days due to small f

RAID at home is dead IMHO unless you have a crazy huge amount of data. If you have a desktop PC then chucking a PCI/NVMe bridge card in it and populating that with Sabrent 1TiB NVMe M2 sticks works out cheaper, faster and more reliable

Agreed. I’ve just dumped my second monitor as well. I’m now down to one Iiyama 22” 1080p unit. I’m considering replacing it with a larger 4K monitor but am demotivated to do this because I don’t want to futz with it all now.

In my case I see people skipping over things they don’t know when estimating like traffic and actual resource deployment and crap like “yeah Jenkins will be fine in a container”. Always assumptions, missing info and costs and poor understan

I hardly miss the Retina display. The 1080p display with 125% scaling is good enough. It’s not spectacular but fine for a laptop. The trackpad I didn’t like on the MacBook either. I found it made my finger tips sore after a few hours. I’m u

I disagree. I got rid of a 2013 MBP and a 2019 MBA and went back to a thinkpad T470 running Windows 10. 300% less of a pain in the ass. Keyboard works reliably and isn’t horrible, doesn’t get ridiculously hot, actually has enough USB holes,

Indeed. I showed my 80 year old mother uBlock Origin and she actually said it made her remaining time more useful. That really put it into perspective.

I don't have a problem with this. If asked I will submit a crash dump. If it shows me what is being sent. That's common courtesy. Opt-in information is absolutely fine. Being unable to opt out and the default being opt-in is what

See the comment about user panels. Select a random portion of your userbase and ask them. Talk to your account managers. Communicate between them. This is software 101. I've built and supported software with 80k end users and did that

I was humming and hawing over moving back to Intel until I read this. So the conclusion I took from this is to wait for Zen 3 to come out and then use the price dumping on Zen 2 cores to get a 65W TDP Ryzen 7 3700X for considerably less coi
