They are until they're not, at which point it's too late. I deal with things teetering on the edge. At some point you get to machine sizes that won't fit in AWS as an example.

I'm not sure it even makes sense for smaller platforms any more. The metric of most business success is really growth. Tying yourself to something which is troublesome to grow because it favours doing things that are difficult to scale

Also this is like South Africa Post Office. 99.9% of packages delivered! = you lost 0.01% of them which totalled millions.

I don’t think it’s even that. Most software developments in the last 10 years are vanity projects, fashion shows or death marches built to sell support, IPOs and conference tickets. We forgot what we were doing somewhere. Oh yes, solving pr

LMAO so true. The search is beyond dire. Not much better on the desktop either.

Why? Because portability, standardisation, documentation and quality. Something GNU manages to screw up pretty well.

It’s more about keeping the machine clean. All systems “creep” and turn up a mess if you don’t maintain them well. So in this case of brew it brings a lot of stuff in that isn’t vendor supported. Which is backed up with time machine. If it

Starting to feel vindicated by my refusal to use Homebrew when I migrated to macOS recently. It felt like bringing a whole lot of baggage along. All I need is working golang and Python 3. The rest I can do on a box in AWS.

Completely agree with this. I think the last 2 or 3 FreeBSD installs I did didn't actually use any tools other than the base system. Then again we're a couple of years off "step 1: install powershell on your Ubuntu box"

M600 fanless is around 15W full whack and 5.5W idle (measured). The CPU in it has a 4W TDP. For that you gain: Decent thermal design., A decent quality enclosure, A power supply (thinkpad brick), Two displayport holes, An SATA interface (M.

I’ve had 6 so far and all have had reliability issues or weirdness. Mostly related to SD corruption, crashing or power brown out. The power issue was not solved by running them off a proper keysight bench supply. SD cards are quite frankly

Exactly the same outcome here. The killer for me is friction and despite Microsoft’s best efforts, it’s always the most painful platform to work on. Nothing is finished, polished or reliable. (I include WSL2 in that)

When I was running subversion we had no downtime in 6 years during office hours. Really git is designed to be serverless and decentralised this centralised GitHub malarkey is probably wrong.

Honestly throw the thing in a bin and use an old mini pc instead. Lenovo thinkcentre tiny. You can pick them up on eBay for about the same as a fully equipped pi. Pi is 100% not suitable for 100% duty work. It’s just a toy.

Ah yes sort of like when we sold out all our electronic component manufacturing in the UK to Philips in the 1960s-1980s. These eventually got spun off to the Far east. Add enough local industry to that and there are unspoken pockets of vacu

I'm comparing to mobile U-series in my (explicitly stated) laptop which is a T470. So for me an i7-7600U. But if you throw a T490 on the table with an i7-8565U it'll blow holes in that as well. As well as I'm sure nearly all

Some comparison points. It's not all about hard benchmarks but what workloads you throw at the devices. 1. The A12Z in my iPad has 2 more vortex cores than the base A12 and 4 more GPU cores. 2. I'm comparing to my laptop, a T470

I do all my dev work in AWS or a Linux box in another room (where it can be as noisy as it likes). macOS is just a nice terminal environment with desktop luxuries and half decent integration with iPhone and iPad.

Even worse for me. Local 2m users are quite nasty people here. They’re either plainly racist Brexit fanboys or hate their wives and nothing else.
