There’s still plenty of innovation left to do. Low bandwidth, low power, long distance signalling is interesting. As are ridiculously high frequencies. Also new modes and repurposing some of the modern radio ICs you can get. But the issue I

Yes they’re terrible for gaming. I’d buy an Xbox instead.

I’ve seen the same ones that do 3GB of reads to return ten rows. The point I was inelegantly making is that it is terrible doing this processing on every read rather than once at write.

I entirely disagree with the first point on the basis that most enterprise applications are CRUD with a poorly contrived search interface. Both of which are somewhat better serviced by anything other than SQL. The second one however is on t

Usually they scale infinitely well until someone opens a PO for a Cray sized database cluster that burns kilowatts of power.

It’s not a myth. In the trite examples provided with tiny datasets they scale. In stark reality when you’ve got 5000+ qps of dog shit queries of several joins each and buggered table statistics (thanks optimiser!) coming in on realistic dat

Just annoying little issues like the six months it wouldn’t power up first time. Turned out to be a GPU initialisation problem. But when you only have one type of each component and the only way of debugging is swapping parts until you find

Average gamer doesn’t need and cant afford that stuff. Some have just got used to having every bell and whistle. Average gamer is playing fortnite which works perfectly nicely on an A12Z. I tried it. Plugged my monitor into my iPad Pro and

Best to buy gold plated wire off the shelf for your design. Solders nicely as well! I played with gold electroplating pens but they are nasty.

Those contacts will oxidise almost instantly. From running morse keys for years, you need gold or phosphor bronze.

I think we lose a screen every 12 months here across 5 phones. People make mistakes. It’s a reasonable hedge on repair costs. As for a sibling comment’s lifespan estimation, that’s why it’s economical to dump the thing instantly after Apple

If you buy it with AppleCare ($79) and sell it after 2 years when that expires the total cost of ownership and the associated risk of owning it is unbeatable. Works out at around $12 a month.

Yeah it’s awful. Window terminal default key bindings buggers up touch as well. I have moved to macOS since wsl2 came out.

Not so lucky here. hated minidiscs from the moment I bought a recorder. I got an imported MZ-R90, fairly late into the cycle expecting maturity, which would persistently overheat when recording for some reason. Playback was reliable however

I've had to do this on much newer thinkpads. The fan on my T470 was on constantly until I went in there and found that the manufacturer applied paste was done badly. Grr.

You tend to have to buy 2-3 times as many SoC boards in the same lifetime as the other item from experience. Thus the savings up front are artificial. I’ve got two dead pi’s here ceased to function while in unattended operation.

They were on this machine. 4 through hole anchors. The shell deformed and ripped the other pins out. The issue is the mechanical leverage vs an 8 layer board vs connector sizing.

My wife broke the USB C port on my T470 when she threw a cushion at me (i was winding her up over something). It tore the connector shell off the board and lifted traces when the cushion landed fairly lightly on it after hitting me. Fortuna

Worth looking at NUC and second hand Lenovo M600 fanless units as well. 900% less crap and I reckon 90% of users don’t plug anything directly into IO ports on their Pi.

Agreed. I’m going to wait for someone else to find out that before me. My mac is mostly a terminal emulator though so I’m quite happy to lose some watts and not gain much for it.

See my comment at the same level as yours. 2020 iPad Pro is about the same as an i7-7700k. It’s insanely fast at a much much much lower TDP.

Yes and no. It’s a confidence builder. A better comparison is an A12Z in an iPad Pro has similar synthetic benchmark result as an i7-7700k. And it feels like it in daily use. So when Apple drop desktops out with this class of CPU we’re not
