I was following this last night because it's hilarious. Last I checked, there were three likely causes for the "performance boost" (or some combination thereof): 1) You have to restart the phone to activate the patch. Many users might not h

Could you expand on the buginess? Was it aesthetic issues, or did you ever face problems like data corruption?

Schemas have saved my ass a million times too, but schema migrations are a pain. I'd love a database that's loose with types by default, but allows you to add declarative specifications for types. Documents are checked at insert/update time

That's sort of a dated rule. I've been here even longer than my account suggests, and the quality has most certainly degraded - both from comments like OP's, and from people defending it under the umbrella of free speech (kind of an absurd

I call bullshit. Researchers have been trying to make auto-parallelizing compilers for decades without anything substantive making it to industry. Even in functional languages, auto-parallelization hasn't worked well because of the coarsene

I think everyone has had that moment when they think "no one knows this pain." It's easy to lose perspective when everything - from a relative perspective - looks like it's collapsing. One could similarly make the argument that a factory wo

Doesn't seem at all ironic. Linux doesn't have a monopoly on open source, and they have no obligation to open source their software nor provide a steaming experience for Linux.

How do filters work? They seem pretty difficult implementation-wise since you can write them in any of the language bindings. My first guess is that you pipe all the data in a table to the client, and the client itself does the filtration.

I would love a system that is schema-less by design, but has guards that can be enforced at insert/update. That way, the underlying data structures don't have to be locked up from complex migrations (as needed w/ ALTER TABLE), but you sti

I'm a regular HN reader and I've never seen this before. I don't think it's so bad to re-post, especially since it's actually HN-quality content.

I think OP was trying to remark that France now is nothing like the France the artist drew from in 1900. Which is true, but it's also true of every place on the planet. This speaks more to the resiliency of nations than anything else.

The APM program teaches you quite a bit about how to innovate - in a large company. YC teaches you how to do it by making your own startup. It depends on what you want.
