Just like Eric Raymond said that you become a hacker when someone else who is considered a true hacker calls you one. I think with most arts the entry into "greatness" is this way.

Mistake 15 makes me think of a quote that always struck me from Machiavelli's Prince: "Since men for the most part follow in the footsteps and imitate the actions of others, the wise man should always follow the roads that have been travell

Money-wise, you could make some via an affiliate program for buying songs. I like the idea of an FB app as well to link it in, people seem to dig those although I don't install many myself. That helps as well since you don't have your fri

Ouch, that sucks for those users... Jason sneered at the idea of social networking based around storage, but that's actually not a bad idea. Storage itself is boring, but it's the basis of any service really. So if you add more than stori

What a great quote: "If lost opportunity is a risk when you try, it’s a guarantee if you don’t." Nice!

Agreed! It's amazing how many applicants you get that have only ever written code for school assignments or other jobs. Contribute to OS, start a project, just do something visible! It also shows you actually like what you do, which st

Definitely depends on the audience. If you know your site/app will be used on older machines or by less tech savvy folks, it's often safer to stick with 800x600 in those cases. Otherwise, do some assessment and decide based on that. If th

We do have a number of companies that depend on our software for some pretty core processes within their businesses. Still, because our software is stable, over time the value of an under-used support contract goes down in their eyes. In

I've also done a fair bit with Prototype/Scriptaculous, but it just seems clunky and excessive in comparison to jQuery now.

jQuery has been a huge time saver for me, highly recommended. I did look at pretty much all of these before settling on it, and haven't regretted it at all. jQuery is amazingly easy to get started with, very concise, but also amazingly ex

To be honest, open source doesn't really benefit the company doing it nearly as much as it benefits the users. Most of them essentially get something for nothing. And nowadays, it's no news story to be open source, so the extra marketing

It's tough. I started my first company on my own, had a sales guy for several years and a few coders on contracts as well, but as a mainly solo gig it's been tough to balance all the tasks you need to do. The tasks that tend to suffer the

While we had a lab full of computers in high school comp sci, we did all our main work on paper and on the chalk board, and all tests were on paper too. We had to learn to think things through in our heads. At the end of each year was a 3

Use Cake to build an app that you can sell online as a service. If the service takes off, there's all kinds of opportunity for learning as it grows and technical requirements change (scalability, security, etc). I've been doing client work

Not that it's an actual autobiography, but "Journey to the End of the Night" by Louis Ferdinand Celine was based closely on his own life and was really something to read, albeit a tough something to get through at times. I was warned that i

I use Debian or Ubuntu (which is based on Debian anyway) since I prefer apt-get over the rpm tools for managing the system. But really, that's more preference than anything else. I've used Fedora and Red Hat before that for a long time. T

Indeed, the first thing I thought was "hey that's PHP! Oh, did he just use rand()?" It ought to be common knowledge in the PHP world that you always use mt_rand(). On OSX, the results aren't very noticeable, probably because the underlying
