The only use I've seen for Twitter is the ability to follow companies for status updates or important announcements. The local university here is looking to do this for students, and I've seen several online services use it for downtime/upd

For sure. This is a slight change, but a big change for the better. Nobody wants to remember a URL when they already remember their email. This makes perfect sense, and solves the biggest issue with OpenID in a way that looks like it puts i

Not really :) I tease my girlfriend because she's on it sometimes for an hour or more at a time, but it's 'cause she's using the chat mostly. I'm generally more antisocial online; I disable chat and basically use facebook to keep up with ou

Hey, I just found another review on gizmodo: http://gizmodo.com/5069661/windows-7-walkthrough-boot-video-... More screenshots and more detailed explanations, including a notable change for connecting to wireless networks. Nice. From this,

Not to beat it to death :) but I look with a bit of skepticism at their 500m active users. I'm not saying it's not a true figure, but I know I personally fall into that number since I log in about once a month to do something on a Yahoo Gro

I would never rely on it as my only means of allowing a user to log in, but I would definitely and plan to use it as an alternate way they can. If Facebook cancels or cripples Connect, then I'd still have the users and a means of letting th

I had said active users specifically. Facebook has exceptionally active users. Yahoo has a lot for sure, and I wouldn't want to underestimate them (they may be hurting in the stock market, but they do have a real and large online presence s

Sweet! I was just commenting in the YOS story about how FB Connect could easily become a market leader in cross-site logins. I've been wondering when they'd announce a release date.

I heard there might be something akin to Facebook Connect for site logins, but it doesn't sound like that's in here. FB connect, OpenID and the like seem like an area with big potential. I think Facebook stands a good chance at taking that

Yeah, a commenter in the story mentioned it works in Firefox and Safari too, which is pretty awesome. Maybe it's that they're trying to take cross-browser compatibility seriously in this one. Business-wise, it would be a good way to grow th

An RSS version would be cool. If you aggregated multiple machines, you could keep tabs on a whole office that way. The way I interpreted their notifications was that they'd add it as some sort of daily or scheduled notification in the syste

Subtle reconfiguration isn't always enough though. I'd love to see the Windows Control Panel cleaned up, for example. That would take a bigger overhaul to do properly. On the flip side, where I agree with you, are subtle things that could b

I guess we'll see if Apple can get that right with their next OS being almost purely under-the-hood changes to improve speed.

This does highlight a few more changes than the Ars Technica article, but it still looks very unimpressive. A slidebar setting for how often you to be notified about changes you made to your OS? Really? Is that a "can't live without" featur

I have to say, once again I'm unimpressed. Most of these changes can be summed up as copies of Expose, smart folders, and file previews from Mac OS, and toolbar thumbnail previews straight out of Ubuntu. Oh, and moving some desktop apps onl

I spoke with someone at Zuora a couple weeks ago. They said it was a minimum $1,000 US / month to use their system, and I think it was around 2% as a transaction fee beyond that minimum. A bit pricey for most bootstrapped or self-funded st

Looking at his source, he does an eval() in the first line of his response handler for the flickr example. I imagine you could do a JSON.parse() instead of eval() -- preferably! -- but if he says it's secure, what about that line?

He does say that "Unlike JSONP, untrusted third-party JavaScript cannot execute in the context of the calling page." I'm not sure why, and I would assume that's as long as you never call eval(), but it would be good to know why he thinks t

I've been using email for my main company, which isn't great. Just finished putting together the new support system, which is still email-based, but also logs everything in a private ticket system and texts if there's an emergency. Respons

Exactly. Their API for me is the distinguishing factor that means I can build SaaS-based offerings on top of them, and at a more affordable rate than EC2 as well. You don't necessarily need the horsepower of a full 24x7 EC2 instance, and

In my experience, freemium can be a really tough sell, and it depends on who you're after as a customer. Consumers (man I hate that word) will pay extra in small amounts as evidenced by the iPhone app store, online games, etc. but I've foun

Interesting, I didn't know that difference between bootstrapped and self-funded. I figured there was a degree of self-funding involved in the early stage of most companies and that you were "bootstrapped" until you were funded or an establ
