Growing up in Sweden, we definitely had school lunches. Bringing food from home was unheard of, school lunch was provided and everyone ate it (and complained about it.) It wasn't until grade 11-12 or something that we sometimes started

Maybe because people think space is cool and there's been close to zero progress for decades before they came along? Or maybe because the goal is something more than just making money, something that clearly set them apart from the oth

the Saturn V developed by Boeing/NAA/Douglas in the 1960s could hurl three times as much weight to the moon as the Falcon Heavy True. At more than an order of magnitude higher cost.

HVDC is harder than AC transmission, but isn't it a solved problem? "In July 2016, ABB Group received a contract in China to build an ultrahigh-voltage direct-current (UHVDC) land link with a 1100 kV voltage, a 3,000 km (1,900 mi)

Yeah, but energy density isn't really significant. You may get less energy out of a m^3 of water pumped to a reservoir than you get out of a m^3 of battery, but even the smallest reservoir has a usable volume that probably surpasses

You'll get there, only to find out that there is no 'there' there. This applies very generally to human nature, people think that there's some magic thing that if only they get that, things will be awesome. In reality,

Isn't this why you're supposed to be able to do the old hand-imprinted manual transactions? If they can't process the transaction, shouldn't they fall back to the manual option?

This is painting the devil on the wall. First, out of all risks you face in life, "multiple armed or unarmed assailants who wish to do me grievous bodily harm" is not really the one that you should be worrying about. Second, how w

In this case it was an irresponsible prank, but it seems perfectly possible that someone could mistakenly give an incorrect address for a real situation, or the 911 operator could copy it down wrong, or whatever. There are simply too many

The summit is at 14,000ft MSL. It's pretty brutal to go up because unlike when you go to 14,000 ft in e.g. Colorado, here you almost always start from sea level. I always get lightheaded and get a headache every time I go up.

That's because there is no "disaster". Apart from sucking for the ~thousand residents who are living in the area where the lava is now flowing, there is no effect on the rest of the island.

I am more positively inclined to British beers like Spitfire and Bishop's Finger which, although I'm not sure they're technically IPA, are definitely quite bitter. I don't think I've ever seen them in the US, though

My personal favorite is Paulaner. Erdinger is also good, but in general any German hefeweizen way surpasses any American wheat. The closest I've found is Widmer. And as far as I know there are no US examples of Dunkel Weizen, the d
