Why is the Iliad's catalogue of ships a pleb filter? IIRC it was just a fairly boring instance of a primarily illiterate culture's historical record keeping, not unlike the "X begat Y" in the Hebrew Bible. Is TFA claimin

Some good advice here, but the “don’t index boolean columns” needs an “it depends” caveat, since Postgres will sometime use multiple boolean indexes to perform a bitmap index scan, which can be advantageous.

The parent comment glosses Kant's distinction between noumena and phenomena as between perceived reality and "underlying reality", and while that is a common way of putting it, I think it's not quite accurate, and leads

Yes, Kant explicitly says "I found it necessary to limit knowledge in order to make room for faith." Maybe I'm mistaken here, or giving him too much credit, but I never quite took him at his literal word here, as if he were s

I don’t believe I am ignoring the political realities. The way I see it, slavery was a hotly contested political issue in America at the time. In another comment of yours in this thread you mention “the exclusions that were made with defaul

It is hard to see this as anything other than pure American ideology. There is no critical thought in this essay, it's like a high school "why was the constitution cool and stuff" exercise. > The American founders put Cice

I would be interested to read these stories, but the twitter links only show a single tweet ending in the phrase "A thread." Perhaps this is a new feature of X whereby only logged-in users can see a tweet and its replies.

Very briefly, the idea of a natural kind term is that of a term that “carves nature at its joints” (Plato’s metaphor), ie is not just a convenient way of splitting the world up into entities but one that reflects the true structure of reali
