For me, the sense in which it "unites a lot of seemingly disparate phenomena" is not that different than the sense in which "purple" unites a lot of purple things. It is true that they are all purple, but ultimately not

What do you mean their general systems theory is unmatched? Unmatched for what? I have read a bunch of D&G (as well as D on his own) and generally enjoy their writing, but I find it basically useless in my every day life and work (softw

Based solely on my personal experience, this log scale graph is no more misleading than a typical log scale graph. What in your mind makes it unusually bad? Do you have examples of better log scale graphs?

Yeah those response times are in the realm of “why would I even consider that”. If I am trying to tune my db queries to have p95 latency of 1ms (for example) there’s no way I would choose an architecture that then threw that all out the win

How would Hanami prevent this without messing with ruby constant lookup? Probably monkey patches to Kernel would be required.

Reusing code in unexpected ways seems like what would be predicted in this scenario, if you agree with the position Naur advances in Programming as Theory Building (which I mostly do).

Interesting, I never bothered to investigate the basis of that claim. According to https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-022-02328-0 , a recent study does show that the vaccine was effective at preventing the spread, w

I wouldn't classify rats<->humans as an analogy in this context. Generalizing (too broadly, probably) premodern medical "science" was explicitly analogical in many ways, e.g. "we will use this herb that looks like

I think the article has a number of good points, though suffers a bit from arguing against strawmen as other commenters point out. I also disagree with the claim that "A system dynamics model, properly considered, is just an analogy dr

Reminds me of the CS Lewis quote, "Don’t use words too big for the subject. Don’t say infinitely when you mean very; otherwise you’ll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite."

What if it was possible to have a local build system that would run tests etc and provide a cryptographically secure hash proving that the tests passed, the build was good, etc then a “centralized” CI system just verified that before permit

This isn’t exactly about treating kids like “young adults” but Magda Gerber’s Your Self Confident Baby is largely about recognizing how capable kids are, even from infancy. Also check out Ross Greene, whose big idea is basically “you can d

Popper’s criticism is, iirc, drawn mainly from Plato’s Republic. But Popper somehow managed to read a deeply ironic and subtle text as a recipe for tyranny. Eg there are numerous points where Socrates makes obviously bad arguments which oth

Even at the 130M rows range, you should still be able to take advantage of indexes for fast queries beyond just the primary key. It's been a while since I used mysql, but around 2010 I was working on mysql 5.something and we had severa
