My understanding is that Apple openly declares they have the same encryption standards in China, and that iCloud Advanced Data Protection was one of the things that started getting them on China’s “naughty list” again.

It will be very interesting to see the responses of WhatsApp and Apple if this moves forward. Do their commitments to E2EE mean anything or not. Will iMessage and WhatsApp leave the EU or not. That would be extremely telling as to the actua

There's a really bad equilibrium where every country (or at least every country big enough to have BigTech workers in their country) figures out they can globally censor the internet by using the assets and people of those companies

The seat switch was accidentally jammed into the “seat forward” position which led to the pilot (who was strapped in) being physically forced into the controls, leading to a significant pitch down.

I agree from a technical perspective actually. What this system does to counteract that is use a social strategy. The government couldn't break "this specific system" without a lot of people knowing, and that makes it very li

What Apple can do (and appears to be doing throughout its products) is not have the data requested. Or not have it in cleartext. NSLs can't request data that doesn't exist anymore.
