Erlang can have long living processes (green threads) and that's usually how we solve problems. There is absolutely no problem (it's encouraged) to have thousand of processes living minutes or hours if we need so.

For example, at one point (presumably very soon) you'll need to understand the difference between Erlang strings (char lists) and Erlang binaries which are called "strings" in Elixir. There might be quite a lot of confusion i

Of course it's (much) better than anything else... though my experience is that it's quite hard to scale your application that much... You always need some shared resource and it gets ugly. And I also suspect Erlang has some imple

I don't think Erlang's VM is that optimized. Currently (as far as I remember) the upper limit is to run 1024 schedulers (threads) but I imagine it certainly wont be 10x more efficient than running 100 schedulers on 100 core machin

What country is this in? Your budged is more than or maybe comparable to most people's budget in my home country - Bulgaria. And they certainly don't get to sacrifice hot water and phone. Please note that I'm not saying this

Yeah, maybe Facebook won't fail as a company, or at least not soon. But I can get OP's argument. I can see it stop being a cool thing people use to connect to their friends. Once a viable alternative is available.

No, because different people have different metabolism. Think of it as if the body has a "target" weight. It actively tries to reach that weight and can compensate overeating (easily, by throwing away excess food) and undereating

The biggest QOL feature of Erlang compared to other "concurrent" systems like node.js for example is that you have the comfort of executing blocking calls. Blocking for the caller that is. No need to pass callbacks. You write your

My experience is with Occulus. Full HD is not enough as you clearly see the pixels. I was so distracted by the "low" resolution that I couldn't immerse myself at all. Probably 4K will be better, but I suspect it still won

I can confirm. This is the case in the whole "Eastern Block". Most people do no work and are perfectly fine with that. At the same time they complain about their low salaries and shitty countries.

Actually it does something kinda sorta similar with Facebook Pages and Groups. Especially now that lots of people write directly on their Pages instead of in a blog. You can "like" the page which is similar to following RSS. Admit

Well, IMHO, nowadays this classifies as bad design. It may have been the better design, but currently git's nomenclature is the standard and not complying to it will only hurt mercurial.

Writing something in PHP made sense in 2004. Although Erlang was around at the time, it wasn't at all well known. And no, you are not absolutely right, Facebook is not a PHP (only) shop. Their chat backend is in Erlang and that's

Cooperative vs. Preemptive multitasking is not the same as Light threads vs. OS threads/processes. Erlang (and also Haskell for example) does preemptive multitasking with light threads. And that's what I'm talking about. Yeah
