Is this it? http://stream.mcohen.me/entry/dropbox-t-shirt---back-22-173.... -- this is great because it almost begs anyone who sees it to ask you what it means.

To get ROI, you need to also know the value of a customer. If each customer pays 2 x Customer Acquisition cost in the first month, then the ROI is 2 in the first month. If it's a subscription, and 100% stay for a year, then it's 24 (or 240

Aside from it not being ROI, I thought it was as good as any guess. What I was hoping for was a clever way of measuring some of the things you assumed. I think what you calculated is called customer acquisition cost. ROI is how much you m

I don't know anything about WUSTL, but I had similar issues with my local University, which has a great CS department, but we found the normal channels too complex. We contacted the University ACM chapter and threw them a party -- pizza, wi

I took "They guarantee that the inputs are legal" to mean that they limited it to programs with specified behavior. They don't know what the behavior is -- just that it is specified. If they can do this, it finds a subset of bugs, with no

As a CrossFitter, I can tell you that I compared the price to personal training. I feel like I get the results of a personal trainer + a community feeling -- and it costs $7/session instead of $30 or more (since I go 5 days/week). After a

I just took a quick look at Patch and it looked like very superficial robo-generated news from public sources (police blotter, HS sports schedule, stock photography). It doesn't look very readable. Here's an article that puts words around

Some interesting observations about Amazon's P/E ratio here http://www.mondaynote.com/2012/05/27/decoding-share-prices-a... on Jean-Louis Gassée's "Monday Note". Basically, Amazon forgoes profit to get market share, will push out all comp

I think that the lesson is -- if you can get your expenses down to $20,000 (which is really hard), you have a chance. In real life, you'll have to make up the difference somehow 1. Work a little 2. Get expenses even lower 3. Find ways to g

Agreed -- the free or $29 price made me think this software wasn't going to be good. If it actually does what you say it does, you definitely need to charge more and the free version (if there is one) should be much more limited.

How much of a problem is this? You said that it wasn't money -- that it was just not knowing the cost. If that's true, I don't understand at all -- the cost is 20% more than the listed price. If you see a burger at $10, that's really $12 --

It depends on what you are using as a UI, but probably. If it boots into a full screen, remote-controllable app that never crashes, then it might be ok. I toyed around with Boxee for Mac on a dedicated old laptop and it was really close --

I would pay 10k to have future unethical employers filter themselves out (even if it filters out some ethical ones too). I might not have handled this exactly like J, but I certainly wouldn't think twice about hiring him because of this.

It should. It depends on which reducing function you choose -- the map step doesn't consume the stream, it just set up the mapped function to be called as you reduce. If your reducing function is lazy, then it works on infinite streams.
