I feel a sense of relief when working in a language where you can paste some code, hit autoformat, and not worry if any lines might have been accidentally added or removed from a for, if, or while block.

If all companies do this, then interviewing at 5 companies eats 5 weeks of time.

We are going to have to agree to disagree here. Anything that eats a full month of my time is a big deal, and I expect companies to be more efficient with my time than this.

If you want to interview at 5 places, and they all have 40-hour projects, then what? You disappear from work for a month while you job search?

I like how it works at big tech companies nowadays. Publicly, you know what level you and other employees are, and the bands for the levels are mostly known (at levels.fyi). This means you have an idea of where your salary relates to others

Exactly, the idea that AI techniques are risky is a minority viewpoint. There is a community of smart people who are very interested in thinking about and mitigating the risk, but it's not something that most ML researchers think much

Similar thing for me. Pulseaudio sometimes takes a bunch of CPU with audio playing. Even stranger, sometimes it keeps taking 5-10% CPU with no audio playing. (I think it is related to running out of memory for a moment and using swap, but n

I didn't downvote it, but it feels like the parent comment is making excuses for rust build times being slow. As someone who's worked with C++, slow build times are a leech to productivity, and I expect new languages to have a bet

Yes, a good way to think about the value of the offer is to take the percentage, multiply by 1/2 to 1/4 for dilution, and then figure out what you get in a good exit ($1B or more). That's probably a best-case scenario. Note t

The machine is a 4 year old, very lightweight laptop, running Ubuntu, with Chrome. I'm regularly seeing 500ms on page loads. Very frustrating when you open pages in new tabs, but they're not loaded when you go to switch over.

Yeah, the article completely ignores that the voters are prioritizing other things. SF voters don't want to send so many people to prison. Yes, that means that criminals and the homeless have more freedom than in other cities. But SF v

I tried out Nim earlier this year. Great language, but the forum was very frustrating to use. Every page takes a few seconds to load. If you open a page in a new tab, you still need to wait for it to load when you switch to the tab. The f

Put the pain on the decision maker. If you need repro steps or the discussion, then each time they are missing from the spreadsheet, ask the PM to find them for you. Either the PM changes to another system, or they figure out how to handle

Learning a bit of ML is always useful. At worst, you'll get a bit of programming and math practice. Be a little thoughtful about trying to do ML work full time (there are a lot of people competing for a small number of positions), and

I think OpenAI tried to be Open, but then ran into two problems: First, turns out that neural nets get better when you throw more compute at them. OpenAI was full of researchers looking to push the state of the art, and the state of the art
