Patreon has its issues, but it's empowered so many creators. I just hope the VC cycle doesn't kill the golden goose.

An excellent article, I really enjoyed this visual take on the λ-calculus. Knowing this would have made my Programming Language Theory much smoother back when I was a CS undergrad.

This is why Microsoft, for all its faults, has huge mindshare in the enterprise: they don't give up on anything, and when they do, they give you years to make the transition.

Imagine if Microsoft did this on PCs. a) prohibiting the installation of non-windows store software (sideloading) and b) insisting that all purchases done via apps give them a 30% cut. I think this is a ridiculous practice on the behalf of

I generally favor free expression. I'd rather an ugly, obnoxious and pernicious idea be expressed - so I can or others can be free to dismantle it in the arena of ideas. Obviously there are tremendous shades of nuance here. Free Speech

I honestly don't know...it seems the majority of Americans are alive to the dangers of COVID and believe we aren't doing enough, and Trump's approval ratings are plummeting, so this doesn't make sense to me -- but his re

I really do think this is a cynical ploy to induce universities to open up more aggressively than they would like. That is the only reasoning I can come up with.

This is neat. This makes me curious about the licencing around popular translations, like the Jerusalem Bible or the NIV; is it not legal to post those translations??

It’s interesting to consider the centrality of the city in ancient literature, and the equation of civilization with urban life. In modern American political discourse, it feels as if the city is constantly slandered or considered alien or

Some overlap with Stoicism here. From the Enchiridion of Epictetus: 1. Some things are in our control and others not. Things in our control are opinion, pursuit, desire, aversion, and, in a word, whatever are our own actions. Things not in

RE: creativity as a muscle, I think this is a powerful shift in framing. A lot of folks treat creativity as this lightening strike that you must passively wait for. And while some creative ideas are like that, many creatives, including some

I've looked at the trajectory of Apple these past few years with mounting bitter-sweetness. At its best, MacOS really felt like the best of Unix combined with the consumer focus alluded to in the article. I still adore the craftsmanshi

Agreed. There's a false dichotomy here. You can use a product, and as a stakeholder demand change. Refraining from using the product entirely is one way to achieve that, but it's not the only way. Many products evolve because of u

I feel like Minix is underappreciated. I'm reading Tannenbaum's Modern Operating Systems at the moment and he makes a persuasive appeal for some of its unique takes of the *nix OS family.

You've honed in on why I love listening to Bach on period instruments; it's kind of a musical analogue to folks who are really into some niche of CS, propelled purely by love and obsession. That passion comes through in the music.
