Funny how the era started with pay to win (coin-op arcades where the games depend on you spending money on them and are completely unforgiving) and ended a generation or two later with pay to win (micro transactions, subscriptions, etc etc)

That is the entire history of gaming though, no? It's the same churn you are working with now but you're not making games or fun, you're making productivity tools or better graphics or whatever, and other people are using tha

You could argue that Bazel, Nix and Guix solve that problem but they introduce a lot of complexity as a result because it's not a simple abstraction. Hell, you could probably pull it off somehow in Cmake if you placed no value on your

The lockfile in this post actually seems a bit more like a manifest, or at least that it's trying to do both things at once. I'd expect you'd have human readable file to list your dependencies and versions in a simplistic way

Something like this would be a welcome addition to Ruby/Rails where you have to pull in dependencies that patch the multiple independent loggers in the stack, some of which break messages onto multiple lines, not to mention the common

The new Data class in Ruby 3.2 also does the job (although it's intended for immutable data) https://docs.ruby-lang.org/en/3.2/Data.html

You’re taking a well-known system, criticising it, and burying the fact you’re from the US well inside of that. We’ve already solved this problem outside of America you know.

This is influenced by Haskell (where) and lisp (let) AFAIK. You’re setting the preconditions for the function, and with elixir you get an extra ‘else’ block to help.

My main bank uses username + password + (random subset of ‘memorable word but actually unencrypted password’ driven by select boxes), then 2FA on top, and it literally feels like they just slapped a bunch of things together to add extra bar

In the UK, for most bills, it is line rental + provider fee. Line rental is to pay for the copper wiring that is still used for landline phones and all of the infra for it (via local loop unbundling). It goes to OpenReach and every ISP rese

Have to say I have a lot of respect for Nightdive after finishing their System Shock remaster. It was faithful, but modernised, and none of the tension or horror was lost in the process. It remastered a 30 year old game but didn't make

My first thought is - what will the modders do. I watched some videos about MyHouse.wad (a Doom 2 level/mod that became popular with the indie horror crowd), and it's seriously impressive. I wonder what happens in the context of Q

I find myself preferring macports for a lot of things, but homebrew has brought its own niceness to the table. It's just a bit of a nightmare as a software author because so much rework is done to repackage your stuff in n formats: o

Those ARM boxes are incredible for the price, I'm using them to document a hobby K8S cluster because the overall cost is low enough that it won't price a hobbyist out. You get a lot of bang for your buck out of them.

Adobe is basically a monopoly and it is well documented that they allowed piracy because it meant that the pirates would become dependent on their tools. Doesn’t matter how you edited a photo technically, it is still photoshopped.
