I wish I could use Hue's silly RGB colour loop mode over this now, but it's still hidden behind a labs experiment. (Connecting to HomeKit via Matter has actually been smoother than using the Hue app)

In the last few places I worked we dropped Yarn for pnpm. Did the job and now dependabot can understand it too, on github. Corepack is a nice addition to Node to make it easy to install a package manager but it's also an unwelcome laye

You can generate TS from an OpenAPI spec and then create type-safe mocks of network calls. Basic mocks and fake servers run the risk of falling out of sync and giving false positives, or just being outright wrong to short-cut some of the wo

If you wanted a quick and easy dynamically served website then you could just as well do it in PHP and rsync your changes over.

Shareholders and investors always want more while becoming more risk averse over time, so a company loses the ability to innovate and then switches its focus to squeezing the customer. Not to mention the cohort in product, design and engine

From another perspective, I think designing and building your own programming language is an incredible way to gain depth of knowledge and not simply breadth.

Roads in the US aren't as safe to cross - you wouldn't take a shortcut across a dual-carriageway in the UK and that's just 2 lanes in each direction. Walking is just an afterthought really, until you get into certain areas li

Nobody calls it '12 factor' anymore but we still adhere to a generic set of principles as a result (since 12-factor predated docker and kubernetes in the mainstream). - Logs as a stream: yep, just write your logs to STDOUT instead

I used DynamoDB as part of the job a few years ago and never got single-millisecond responses - it was 20ms minimum and 70+ on a cold-start, but I can accept that optimising Dynamo's various indexes is a largely opaque process. We ha

I'm not saying annotations are bad though, I'm saying Spring's over-reliance on them makes the code harder to follow. Some of those annotations are actually done at compile-time via Lombok, which makes it even harder to know

I never hated Spring, I got used to working with it. I found the annotation-based approach to configuring classes really opaque though, and it was hard to understand how to configure things because those were also magic annotations, and the

I haven't had that comms issue with Google but I have to say, even though I prefer GCP to AWS in terms of user friendliness, it is far too often the case that you find exactly the solution you need only to learn it's deprecated in

I've had similar difficulties and it seems like Terraform is basically a content-addressable system, where the directory tree is part of the addressable content. The addition of `moved` is welcome but I feel like it was a huge mistake

It almost defeats the point of versioning on networked/web APIs really. On the one hand you have library code that is semantically versioned, and for good reason those versions are immutable so if something changes you have to pull dow

Outside of dependencies, application code is basically 1.{infinitely_incrementing_integer} How many application APIs expose v2, v3, v4? You just append to v1 and add proxies to map old APIs to new ones.

I think, perhaps, that declaring oneself a benevolent dictator on a project that is more or less a proposal still is just jumping the gun a bit. Any project needs good leadership, of course, and at the start that leadership is going to be c

Deno is just trying to compete with other JS/TS SaaS with this. Vercel/NextJS has a KV service now; Cloudflare has it; in other cases it's Firebase. I contend that this is not actually forward thinking, but monetising Deno as

What does ‘minimal’ even mean though? Code is code - either you pull it down as a dependency or you write it yourself, it all executes the same in the end. The minimal/zero-dep solution will have have bugs that have already been fixed
