But every time you tell people what they do wrong they can begin to figure out how the abuse detection works. What if the threshold is at 25 domains, so instead people start opening multiple accounts that run only 24 domains. By telling peo

Its possible that the argument is that all visitors at Google are recorded and thus those logs are the same as logging network users. Curious though, I glanced briefly at the wikipedia article ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communications_

Google public access is NOT the on-campus Google Wifi. On campus theres some Wifi network that is open and unrestricted. The public access one has a public portal (and vastly lower coverage in Mountain View last time I checked.)

Google has a JSON-based API: http://code.google.com/apis/ajaxsearch/documentation/#fonje Its misleadingly named, hard to find, etc etc, but it exists. :/

Right. Lets return to my original Google Search analogy. Google Search costs Google a fortune to run, theres all this indexing and bandwidth and serving infrastructure thats just being wasted. Remember at the time most people were looking a

I find this a rather strange article. Flash back in time to before Google was All-About-Ads: Google can not keep subsidizing its search users! Clearly they work great, but the tech demo is over, and its not as effective at selling their cor

Just wondering, why is it important to have a viable competitor to Google? Are you worried about corporate shenanigans, or a single point of failure or something entirely else?

(Sidenote: Google search is not just PageRank. Many of the recent changes to search require more than just a better popularity metric. Obvious things are things like better stemming or stop wording which are quite tricky to get right.)

Sure, thats reasonable. I think I'm just a bit frustrated by the "so and so works at Google, therefore they must have chosen technology X or approach Y because of their presence!" when its very hard to know what everyone in (or formerly at)

I believe Udi Manber works in Search or online something or other, and not Apps. There are 10,000 engineers (in varying capacities) at Google, who have all done lots of disparate and random things. Sometimes, by sheer stroke of luck, people

Google recently published a bunch of specs on their server fleet, touting energy efficiency. The designs were somewhat old, but certainly its not withholding information solely to keep data centers expensive.

Javascript has implicit semicolon insertion. This means that some lines of code will not do what you'd expect if you make a dumb mistake.

I just wanted to bring up a counterpoint. I work on Google Moderator, with a smattering of other 20%ers. My boss semi-discouraged me from putting time into it (he would prefer I spent my "20% time" on a project within my department), but it

The only problem of course is that when your "more complex than a very simple project" hits the size where Eclipse just can't take it any more. A project I'm working on is pretty much at that scale, and random things basically stop working

Uh, when I say casual games, I really mean people playing scrabble on facebook or the games on yahoo, or things like bejeweled. I have a sneaking suspicion they enjoy a much broader demographic than half life 2 and its ilk.

Gaming by and large is dominated by casual games which do not require these "thousand dollar machines" (which outside of the true "enthusiasts" I doubt people are really buying anyway.) Most everyone has a computer, and I'm sure anyone that

Indexing, in the trivial sense is easy. PageRank (which is old) is already a step beyond (How does one deal with spam? How does one handle redirects, or splash pages that forward you somewhere). Semantic analysis is a step further (what doe
