What you describe may apply more to writing code, rather than reading code. Of course, knowing syntax is not sufficient for programming, but if you want just to review existing code, (unfamiliar) syntax may be an obstacle to non-program

Yes, your second sentence makes sense to me. I guess I imagined the inflation-adjusted value of X to be defined at time t to be something like: value(X, t) / value(USD, t). So, when I substitute USD for X, I get constant 1.

I don't understand the details on how inflation is measured here, but I expected the US Dollar curve to be a constant 1, after the normalization. However, it seems to go down. What does that mean? That the dollar loses value faster tha

I'm guessing you can still go back in time and just "forget" what came after wards, by using backups of the repo file.

Similarly, as a youngling, I often confused GNU and Gnome, in particular because several popular (often GTK-based) applications from either started with `g`, eg GIMP, gedit, gparted.

If you're looking for similar books with realistic depictions of agriculture: No, that was a lucky find in the library. In case you just want to practice German with media for children, I always recommend "Die Sendung mit der Maus

For me, that killer app was the JuMP package [1] for formulating optimization models. It has a nice syntax (via macros), connects to many solver backends and even allows for solver-generic callbacks. A list of features that is (mostly) unhe

It's true, and the article mentions land-use change as the main factor. That could be chopping down or burning a forest to make land for corn.

Similar with the artificial battle front between organic vs conventional/industrial, where each side claims the solution to sustainable food production, but no common ground is allowed. By the way, not all children's books are equ

My understanding was not that we have too much manure, but that it's too concentrated. If it were more evenly distributed, it would not cause the same problems with downstream water etc.

I can disable the on-board sound card in the BIOS settings on my Thinkpad (T440p), so unplugging the USB headset should do the trick (but then there's no music either).

I wanted to ask the same thing: Couldn't we just use Optional and None for this? So the point of using Koda is to communicate intent (functions that don't throw exceptions), and some utility methods?

Nice article and application idea (clustering). After reading about the dissonance theory by Sethares [1] used as the basis of TFA, I also did some related experiments of finding the most consonant 3-note chords in different scales (not lim

Not strictly ML, but "Optimization Methods in Finance" by Cornuejols et al [1] a great reference. It introduces optimization algorithms and modeling technique as well as finance applications in alternating chapters. [1] https:&#x

It wasn't necessary as of some months ago. I don't have a smart phone and at first they would send a SMS with TAN, but now they switched to sending an email with the TAN.

If all ingredients are measured in cups, it doesn't actually matter much, since you'd still get good proportions by using any of your cups. It's problematic if some ingredients are specified by volume, others by weight.

Nice, this is very enjoyable. Will definitely pick this up again, after I get a new ergonomic keyboard. Would be nice to also type code from famous open-source projects, to practice hitting all the parens etc.

A related approach: Have a smart phone, but leave it at home. I stopped my smart phone usage habits some years ago, but I find that I still "need" it for some specific 2FA apps, in particular banking. So I just keep it permanently

I went through multiple stages with org-mode myself: 1) Just use it naively, instead of the ad-hoc note-taking I did before. 2) Customize it heavily, including a system for citation management. I definitely wasted a lot of hours reading doc
