I don't fully understand resigning on principal. Hopefully this argument is naive and someone can correct me, but why not stay and fight for what you believe in? I worry that leaving is like removing the last vestige of hope. If Blank

The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York earned Robert Caro a Pulitzer prize for biography. I'm reading the first of his 5 part (and counting?) biography of Lyndon Johnson which I also highly recommend.

From what I've read, along with anecdotal experience, the opposite seems to be true. Its seems like you need to be exposed to urishiol a few times before you get a reaction to it. Often subsequent reactions are worse than the initial.

Generally you don't want to get to close to cashew trees. The seed and other plant parts contain urishiol. This is the same compound in poison oak/ivy that causes allergic reactions. In general people who harvest cashew fruit wear

The post-apocalyptic, young adult series "The Uglies" by Scott Westerfeld is based on a similar idea. A Fungus is created that causes petroleum products to explode when exposed to air (thus further spreading the spores).

I would guess that people just don't care enough about getting rid of the common cold. If you're in the vaccine making business, you might as well try and cure some diseases that are killing people. There's more than enough w

You're right, they shouldn't give all of that away for free. They deserve to make money for their service. I don't really have an opinion on the business model, or whether it's right or wrong to force ads on all videos.

You're totally right, they want more money. I agree they don't have a perfect monopoly either. There are lots of other options. The reality is, most of their customers aren't going anywhere. Consider all the times you use You

I think what we're saying is compatible. Youtube isn't really doing anything new, just putting out more ads. They're able get away with it because they have a monopoly.

I agree with most of what you're saying, but I worry that Youtube's effective monopoly means that there just aren't other hosting platforms with the same kind of user base and discoverability. Perhaps their current pricing

This is a fascinating history. This New Yorker article goes deep, but in another sense it barely scratches the surface. Retelling this story would make an amazing HBO series.
