Obviously a distribution would be best, but for a single number, the mean is better. For example, if groupon says they have 100,000 customers and they will have 200,000 customers next year, and the mean # of groupons per customer is 2.5, th

As a second opinion, I had never thought of housefeed when thinking about housefed. Housefed is like grassfed, and I would never think of grassfeed.

How do you deal with the url if it can change? For example, you register for example.com on http://register.example.com and then login on https://login.example.com and in the future they may change it to https://examplelogin.com/auth/

The last 2 pages of the paper has 3 comparisons with hq2x. It seems like the new algorithm does appear to be better than hq2x by being smoother and simpler.

I think the problem with this argument is that our observations are pre-selected before see them. This biases our predictions towards spectacular success/failure stories and exaggerated anecdotes. What would have happened if you were Facebo

I agree with the general theme of the OP. Bayesian methods are technically better than frequentist methods. However, like Betamax vs. VHS, there is more than just the technical correctness. Your point in 2.2 is the big one -- if there was a

I think you've fairly accurate described the majority of irc channels related to programming. I've been running #winapi on freenode for over 6 years (writing windows programs used to be the way to impress your friends before making websites

I had no idea what the news article was talking about, but it sounds like topic modeling with a temporal component. Why didn't they put the paper title or algorithm name in the news article? It's frustrating to read something dumbed down en

Very nice, the suggestions seem more useful than some of the other tools I've seen. Is it possible to combine this with an SEO checker, spellcheck, and browser incompatibility check? PS: running slowcop on slowcop.com yields a few areas of

Yes, this. I think the main concern would not be the DNS servers being lost, but the revocation of domains to raise money, or redistribution of the domains by the (potential) new regime.

This is a very interesting comment. It reads a bit like "phd hacking". Did you try this? The work done by the OP is indeed has potential to be published. The above comment, while written in an encouraging tone, has some caveats that might b

Maybe I misunderstand... but why would you get the first edition (which I assume has more errors) for the same price of the third edition? Is it for collecting, or is there something particularly good about a first edition?

I've always thought the MongoDB database was really good, but has poor drivers for node.js. I've been using node-mongodb-native, and it has basically no documentation. If you want to use a relatively new feature, you have to figure out how
