According to the article, "However, authors may formally request that a particular RE review their paper. They may make only one such formal request at a time. The RE is given a short time to accept or refuse to review (e.g. 2 weeks) and a

If you already have PDFs, isn't OCR simply a PDF --> PDF+metadata conversion? Why wouldn't some open source OCR software work, where you feed it your old PDFs and it outputs OCRed PDFs. Is this some kind of tactic for scanner manufactur

From looking at the companies' websites, they seem to be nearly all started by founders living in Seattle or the Northwest, so probably not.

This definitely should be disclosed to the employee. From my understanding, it would make it difficult to get a job at Apple if you accept an offer at Intel. Basically, this closes doors for you, and makes a job offer at Intel less valuable

I actually enjoyed reading this. The first half is uneventful but builds up to the wacky second half.

I'm surprised the authors of this article completely missed the many extended query languages specially made to process large sets of data, published in top computer science conferences by Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo. Microsoft has SCOPE:

One thing that people here haven't mentioned: Good furniture -- costs pennies per day, is there waiting for you after a long day, makes your place aesthetically pleasing, allows you to entertain guests, and you can sell it for at least half

This is a little bit different -- the dots don't fall back down after a while if you leave the cursor there, whereas the Google ones did. Is this intentional? And is it okay to reuse this on other sites?

You have a valid point but I'm guessing they avoided kl-divergence because it's 1) harder to explain 2) it's not symmetric, e.g. kl(asian, white) != kl(white, asian) 3) it needs a smoothing function for comparing distributions where not eve

There is a delay for the button to "shift" up AND glow. That's two steps and most buttons have only a single visual feedback, so it feels like it's laggy due to this extra step. I agree that it's a bit too much.

I wish it was $2.50 in Seattle. I'd even be overjoyed to pay the Bellingham price of $2.82. I paid $3.11 to $3.17 the last two times I filled up last week.

Digg never seemed like the kind of company that was run by an engineering culture. It feels like a MySpace type of company, where they have good marketing / media people but not about the technology and platform. One thing that suggests thi

I don't find being able to view the mangled pdf on screen worth the time saved downloading the actual pdf. With video and audio I can understand the benefit of in-browser viewing, but why do we need this service for pdfs anyway?

Another reason is to collect data on the webpages you visit for data mining and improving web search. The more data a search company has, the better it can rank results and personalize ads. See these papers from Microsoft and Yahoo: http:/

This thread has come up a couple of times: Just wanted to point out that even if you get the grant, 1) they are reimbursing you 90% of your startup budget rather than giving $40k cash money, so 2) you have to put in the other 10% which is 4

Did anyone notice that 1) they are reimbursing you 90% of your startup budget rather than giving $40k cash money, and 2) you have to put in the other 10% which is 4k. I don't know if you can just budget $44k as salary but I highly doubt it.
