yes but in my experience even though they exist, many applications are written in an outside environment, in order to take advantage of software engineering facilities that are not available "in the DB". This competes with the ide

I'm going through similar stuff at the moment; fluffing up my opengl application with an actual interface that is forgiving and functional is proving slightly less trivial than I thought - but fun. And oh so nice compared to native Win

Yep I second this. This is, in my opinion, what defines a senior level software engineer - the ability to tradeoff where necessary and possible.

And then when you've answered all of those, surely the next one is: 5. How willing are you to undercut yourself, due to financial desperation? Out of that question will pop out a selling price.

I think the best way to grow, or mature, is to make mistakes. And the best way to make mistakes, is to do what we don't normally do. In a professional setting, this would equate to a job that allows a certain amount of variety. If you

Years ago, I was the junior in this situation. Being very careful about how to criticize code publicly/not criticize is a skill in its own right!

There are arguments both ways, but I disagree with others here - namely, that these, and therefore anything created by humanity, can be considered part of the system. For example, you could then go on to say that medicines also form part of

Appreciate the answer, thanks. I guess that would rule out the people who definitely do not even want the possibility of the prospect of maintaining their own engine. I would be curious to know what kind of percentage we would be talking ab

I do not wish to appear overly cynical (and apologies if this does), but what is stopping me investing all my time/effort into this, and finding out the licensing terms have changed such that it becomes more on par with commercial offe

Agreed, as I said - depends on what you write. It's a shame that so much of the industry actually devalues the very thing that got us into this in the first place (presumably not just money, but some love of engineering quality softwar

Depends what kind of software you write. Wouldn't want to get into an aircraft that has software written to those standards.

Whilst I don't agree with all you said, indeed the problem we have as a society is that (as snowden et al have revealed), is that I cannot even trust my firmware. And if I cannot trust my firmware, what is the point of securing anythin

I must admit, this is an interesting spin on it. Most people are not aware of the scale of this thing. And it's just getting going. I don't think people's ignorance is a good reason to not protect them. If all the companies a

Your talking about the difference between immediate mode vs retained mode, immediate mode being the "self contained render" method. This is nice and clean up to a point in complexity, and then the advantages of retained mode (or &

That's ridiculous. My 2015 MacBook gets warm/hot as a matter of course during the normal use of software. How am I supposed to know whether it is a precursor to an explosion or just normal usage? Apparently there is no way to know

Yes, apple does optimize. I'm not disputing that; neither starting a silly "apple vs" debate. I am no fan boy of either mac or PC - I just use whatever is best. The point is, that "equivalent software" runs faster.

This goes against my (and others) experience. Every recent OS release, Apple has dumb'd down the UI, not just for devs, but any user.

I have felt this pain also. I had a play - even spent a bit on the developer ID. What a waste. I was doing a Unity 3D* app for fun (part of the fun would be publishing it) and got all the way to the end, just to realise the amount of bureau
