Very fun! I just started taking singing lessons and it's fascinating how deep the everyday act of making sounds with your mouth goes! I was gifted with a somewhat deep voice so I could only see a couple of the singers. I wish there w

This is maddeningly common, even these days. Unfortunately, many mono-lingual people don't realise that language does not map perfectly from one word/phrase to another. When I used to translate people in the office would come up a

When people talk about a mono-racial Japan it's worth mentioning that the census data for Japan doesn't record ethnicity. Depending on where the statistics come from data may have been calculated by assuming that everyone with Ja

I'm not doubting you, but I find it genuinely puzzling how our experiences can be so different. For me, being treated differently to Japanese looking people is just the norm. At first I assumed it was my Japanese level or some other f

As a visible minority in Japan, experiences like this are extremely commonplace. In fact, I think the frequency is the most troublesome part. Every time you step out of the house there is someone there to remind you you are foreign. Just

Somewhere, there is a Japanese news website with the headline "Marksmanship taught in American schools". Yes, this is true in a sense but it is definitely hyping up the "mysterious Japan" angle.

A slightly frivolous question but I'd like to hear your opinion. If you were to design an immigration system from the ground up, how would you do it? How would you decide who gets work visas etc? I deal with immigration to Japan a fair
