In Las Vegas, always tip the front desk person. When you give them your ID and credit card, also include a $20 bill - or a green chip if you've already started gambling. It's in Las Vegas culture to tip everyone all the time. Abou

MIT doesn't offer scholarships to anyone. It only offers need-based aid.

Debt is a very useful financial tool that's misunderstood by a lot of people. These kinds of "TAKE THE MONEY" comments conflate credit cards used to buy a TV with a student loan to go to MIT. This "TAKE THE MONEY" w

You should absolutely go to MIT. Consider negotiating more aid as someone else suggested, but even if that doesn't work, this is the best investment you'll ever make. If you want to do research, MIT's UROP program is amazing,

The only news source I follow is bloomberg.com. I was introduced to it through the Bloomberg Terminal, and continue to follow it after leaving the industry. It seems to me like the only news service that reports without any bias.

This is very obviously wrong, but it is the conventional wisdom. Every time someone says something like this and mentions Jimmy Buffet you know they're just quoting some movie like Wolf of Wall Street. Trading is a real job and the mar

Exactly. If you press the brakes the system gives complete control back to the driver. It's interesting to see all of the comments about the "horrifying" experiments Tesla is doing, and quoting science fiction movies about ho

If you will still have your home Internet just set up a VPN on your router's configuration page. It's really easy and I just used the router's factory firmware to do it.

Try meeting people in lecture and recitation to do problem sets together. This gives you a whole new set of people to meet every semester, for every different class that you take. Doing problem sets together is a really good excuse to intro

As far as I'm aware, there's an attack where you can determine how correct a password is based on how long it takes to get denied. For example, take a simple algorithm where you check the password character by character, and retur

I really like this extension, but can you restrict it to only a small subset of words that grows over time? If I see lots of different words, I'll forget them, but if I see the same words over time, I'll remember them.

Five years is not the only thing -- it's also summer prices, whereas the other peaks were during very cold winters. Natural gas is very very seasonal, so winter gas and summer gas are different commodities almost. Production is higher

This is because of the shale revolution, so you can't go back that far. They're different eras. As for 2014, it was because of the polar vortex. The current high prices are in the summer. https://en.wikipedia.org/w

I'm sorry, but this is just wrong. Natural gas prices are higher than I've ever seen them, only comparable to one very cold winter year. This is not just a return to pre-Covid prices, this is due to government policy. Same with cr

They don't need to. They're already the market leader, and will dominate the new age of EVs that they basically created. I think government should stay out of this and let the free market sort things out.

This doesn't seem dishonest to me. I'd do the same thing. If my company is truly strapped for cash, I'd offer a low salary (to "keep the lights on") and give more equity instead. If someone told me their bills are t

I remember being a freshman and seeing the lecture hall 32-123 being temporarily hack-renamed to 6.001, and I didn't know what that was all about. I think it was the last lecture of 6.001, but I didn't know what it was back then.
